View Full Version : Anyone Shave with a Straight Razor?
I've tried out a traditional safety razor, but I think that's as far as I'm willing to go.
My barber still uses a straight razor to clean up my neck/around my ears. I'm afraid if I tried using one to shave, my new nickname would quickly become "Scarface".

I tried it once but I have bad history with sharp objects. I use a mug and a brush though. I've doing that for decades and found it is cheaper, better, and you can carry on your stuff at the airports.

Something I've always wanted to do. Find an old school Barbershop and experience a straight razor shave. I would never trust myself with such instrument so I'll leave it to a pro. I've heard the shave is so close you can go days before needing to shave again.

I got the whole hot towel, straight razor shave treatment when I was in Las Vegas once. It was an OK experience but I got a closer shave with my Gillette Mach 3. I use "The Art of Shaving" products and love em.

I kind of miss the old days when the barber used to trim the sideburns with the foam and straight razor after every haircut. I never had the whole shave done with a straight razor though. And I certainly wouldn't attempt it myself.
If it did catch on again, just think how many throats would be slit during the morning commute

The straight razor is not for the faint of heart. I used one for awhile, but even after I got good at it, I always had trouble maneuvering around the chin area. Plus, at least in my case, once I sharpened it, it was never the same as when it came from the factory.
I recommend you get a regular razor (mach 3 or whatever you like), but invest in a badger hair brush (a good one will cost around $60 and will last forever) and shaving SOAP (about 18 bucks I think, but one disc of soap lasts me a little more than a year. You don't need to have it really thick on your face). You will definitely notice the difference. I got my brush, soaps, and soap holder from Truefitt & Hill.

The "old days"? :noidea:
My barber does this every time i get my haircut - every 2 weeks. I also like getting a barber shave every not and then.

Are you the teenage werewolf or something?
For me, it was the days of yore. I don't see much of that around here anymore. Well, maybe it's because I get the 5 dollar rice bowl haircut.

Got to thinking about what LAWNMUSIC posted and placed an order. One thing I'm tired of doing is always dispensing way more shaving cream into my hand than I need. I bet I wash half a can down the drain by the time the can is empty.

 I wear my hair buzzed ... #2. It starts to look shaggy after a few weeks.

I have the luxury soap in the wooden bowl- this was a gift, you can obviously just put the soap in a mug or other dish
http://www.truefittandhill.com/items_34.html
My brush is a Carlton SB (Super Badger)- I like it because it's soft, but not too soft
http://www.truefittandhill.com/items_17.html
I feel that using the brush really does soften the skin and raise the whiskers to make it more comfortable to shave. Now, we'd all be set if we could just grow some handlebar mustaches.

Did my first shave this morning using the shaving soap and brush. Zero wasted soap which is a big plus. Seems to be a much closer shave using the soap versus canned cream/gel. Very happy with the results.
Anyone consider laser hair removal on your neck area or entire face? I'm getting tired of the razor burn and ingrown hairs on my neck and figured, "If I'm gonna do this for 30 years, I might as well make it easy and get rid of my neck hair."
Seriously, its reasonably cheap and it would be a write-off.

Save the wooden bowl a lot of soaps fit in it. I found some Italian stuff called (I think) Virgilio Valobra that is pretty good. It is the consistancy of clay so it will squeeze nto your bowl. I found it at the candle store in Columbia Ca. but I have also bought some online.
I thik I had to start shaving shortly after birth so I got tired of the constant scraping. The mug and brush bit put an end to that. It works into the face rather than just sitting on top like the whipped cream stuff.
Big tip, use less than you think will work and brush it around alot.

Oh Christ....
I'm small, not terribly muscular, and have a high octave voice. One of the few manly oriented rituals I had is now being shattered by talk that I normally hear when dropping off hair dryer parts at the beauty parlor. Someone please pass me a magnum cigar and nudie magazine:biggrin:

Practice with a blown up ballon. My barber uses a it to clean up the lines. I stick with my fusion but it's like I have to shave every three days because on the 2nd day my 5 o'clock shadow starts showing.

My barber told me that was part of the testing at Consumer Affairs, I am sure you have notice that all barbers have a license from them....they have to shave a balloon without popping it

My wife has her Cosmotology license and she had to cut a balloon's hair without popping it.

J if you change to a brush and shaving soap you'll notice a difference. You may think you get a close shave using the gel,but soap does a much better job.

I don't necessarily think I get a close shave but it's definitely fast. I wouldn't need to shave if I didn't have neck hair though.
