"An off-duty highway patrol officer is credited with saving an elderly couple who were knocked into the surf by a wave at Goat Rock State Beach Tuesday.
Ted Kenison, 75, and his wife Inez Kenison, 74, both of Pioneer, Calif., were walking near the shore break when a wave knocked them off their feet and pulled them toward the ocean.
“Goat Rock has a dangerous berm where it drops off where the waves are breaking,” said Jeremy Stinson, supervising ranger for the Russian River District, California State Parks. “They were actually struggling in that shore break where the waves were breaking,” he said.
CHP officer Eric Clary was off duty and enjoying a day at the beach when he saw the couple struggling in the water, Stinson said. Witnesses said he went in after them and was able to pull both to safety.
The couple was evaluated at the scene and treated for minor scrapes.
“Unfortunately this does happen several times a year. Our lifeguards work real hard at preventing these kinds of situations and making these contacts,” Stinson said.
There were no lifeguards at the beach at the time of the incident, about 3:30 p.m. Two lifeguards were on duty and patrolling the 20 miles of coast they are responsible to monitor."
Nicely done, Eric!
