View Full Version : Any new word on CHP motors?
There was a thread a while back about the departments plans to replace the BMW's with Harleys. Does anyone know the current status of this issue?
Thanks

I could be totally in left field on this one, but last I heard Harely had won the bid, but they had not yet provided the department with a bike to put through the road course for testing. I am assuming they are testing the Harley now, but maybe an officer can comment more on this.

Last information that i heard, everything has been very quiet as of late, is that harley won the bid, but that info. has been around since like dec.
the last update that i was able to find was that harley was doing a third test, that is not supposed to happen, because the gov. wanted harley to have another chance. that information said that harley still continued to not submit a bike that could pass. i was also informed that BMW has a stockpile of bikes waiting, enough to replace all of the old ones, waiting to hand out as soon as they are given the contract.
disclaimer: remember i am not an officer. this information comes from officers, along with both harley and bmw dealers. when i get the chance i will go around again and try to get some more info.

So we can't convince you to try Hondas then?

This one is only good for 180mph ... not too many speeders get away in the UK !
We don't get to use it very often, our bike of choice is the STX 1300
Although the STX's in Police use in the UK are currently limited to 100mph as there is an investigation going on after an officer died when his bike threw him off at over 100mph on his motorcycle course.

No new update. Harley won the bid, but is having problems passing the dept.'s test. No one is talking. It must still be a secret.
back to the smith& wesson vs. sig cluster.....does the dept really care which one is better for their officers?? safety, performance? harley won the bid but from what i hear, the bike cannot pass the required minimum for the chp. harley has to do several mods to let it pass and it still failed...i dont know for sure what mods...smalled tanks, bigger brakes...whatevers, so why is harley even in the pic????? why? who cares if your not riding one, your in the office where its 65 degrees always? you might fall off your chair but thats another story. why dont they just give us vespas!!!!
yup its still a secret until sac bee gets a hold of this!!!!

Santa Clara PD has 2 harly's And they use BMW dirt bike style bikes. CHP should try those tehre good for jumping over things and go for off roading and stuff. But the Harlies get the shocks messed up alot I have been hearing

Last time I checked our Motors don't tend to do a whole lot of off roading, although I suppose they do jump over things from time to time. I'm sure Ponch and John would have saved a lot of wear and tear had they been assigned dirt bikes.

I thought they did have dirt bikes a couple of times...
