View Full Version : Question regarding conduct

Hi forum, I've been considering a career with the CHP for a long time, seriously for the past year or so.

I have a question regarding "personal conduct". I'm 29, when I was 17 I was arrested by local cops along with a few buddies for something minor - an infraction (just one of those stupid things kids do in high school). Anyway, no charges filed, no jail, etc. My question is two fold: Does the arrest need to be listed since I was a minor and if so, in your opinion, would it be something that could affect the prospect of my being selected?

--Thanks in advance

Be honest and say what you did so we can give an honest answer. However, generally something like that would not be an issue as long as you were honest about it and told the entire story. We look at EVERYTHING! Juvenile or not.

Thanks, I appreciate that. Something else I meant to mention, regarding the financial portion. What type of information are they looking for? Lost my job (company folded) in 99 and it all but killled me. No bankruptcy or anything, but a lot of lates, charge off's, etc. Big deal?

--Thanks again

First of all, welcome to the forum. If you are serious about a career with the CHP, this forum has a wealth of information. As far as your arrest, as long as you tell them everything and are honest about the situation, there should be no problem. I am assuming, from what you have said at least, that the arrest was for something pretty small. Plus it was 12 years ago. As long as you are completely honest with EVERYTHING, you should be fine. The reason most people get DQ's is because the "forgot" to mention something on the Arrest and Citation form, or the PHS.

The CHP does expect people to be perfect. If anything, they know more than anyone that people make mistake, heck they deal with people who make mistakes every day. What I am saying is, as long as your honest, and can show them that you have changed your ways, and have your head on straight now you should be fine.

About the financial part, you should put down anything and everything you think is relevant. And even those things you dont think are important, put those down just in case. My BI told me that it is better to give too much information.

Just remember to be honest, and be yourself. And dont worry about the arrest too much, I am assuming, since no charges were filed etc. etc. it wasnt too bad. Good luck and if you have any questions feel free to ask away, but make sure you search the forums first.

As you will read in the instructions when you get to this point in the application process, and has already been stated, you must list EVERY arrest and EVERY citation in your ENTIRE life ANYWHERE in the world regardless of disposition.

OOPS, I forgot to put down on my application that in 1965 in Savannah Beach Georgia three Army buddies and I were arrested by SBPD for having open containers of beer on the beach. We were taken to a dank little beachside substation and placed into a cell. Outside the cell was a closet sized office staffed by a Buford T. Justice lookalike. After about an hour he asked us how much money we had on us. I think between us we had something like $119.00. He took that in cash, gave no receipt and released us with the admonishment to, "not let the moon rise on our sorry asses in Savanah, GA."
Should I turn in my pension and retirement badge?

Thanks for all the replies. I wasn't planning on leaving anything out, I just wanted to know just what they were looking for, now I know for sure.

What sources can I use (when I get to this point) to make sure I don't omit anything? Is it possible to be absolutely certain of dates of citations, etc.? Thanks (again) in advance. This is a very informative forum!

Do everything possible to include exact dates. If not possible, list as many details as possible.

You can pay extra for a 10-year driving history from DMV.
You can contact courts where a citation was issued.
You can contact issuing agencies.

When I was filling this form out, I was able to get copies of my citations from the city/county records. Lucky for me, all of my citations where in the same city  I assume you can do the same where you are at.

More great info, thanks. I haven't had a citation since '00 (knock on wood). A buddy of mine actually got a speeding ticket on the way to his PAT in Fresno a few years ago. He was late because of it. They were really understanding when he got there ;)

I can't help but feel that this is just a taste of the attention to detail they expect from you at the academy.

I was thinking I might go down to my local office to speak with an officer about the opportunity. Is this encouraged?
