For anyone that has completed the medical exam:

Could you please tell me if you were given the depth perception test where you wore the glasses and had to see which item popped out at you? Was there any type of depth perception test other than the one mentioned?

Thanks in advance,

I don't see this as confidential information as there is nothing that we can do to prepare for a medical exam so I will answer it.

No, as far as I remember I had no depth perception test

Thanks Force, I kinda knew you'd come through. I figured as much as I saw no entry for it on the medical exam forms. I'll explain my question a little more later when I have some time. Got to go put the boy to bed now.

No problem.

If DW has any problems i know that he will just delete it. DW (if you read this) is the medical a safe topic to talk about for all questions?

I finished up my medical today for the CHP and a city PD. Neither had a depth perception test.

I wear contacts and had to have my doctor fill out a form. No big deal.

To all that read this, get that eye exam form filled out early so you don't have to worry about it. I was being told that the eye exam at the PAT was good enough for the recent one within 3 months part, it ISN'T. It is not that big of a deal, but maybe your eye doctor is really busy and might take a while.

Yeah the form was a real surprise for me when I read about it in my medical paperwork. I had to call the division office and have them mail me one as it was the first I had heard of it. Fortunately my eye doc is very helpful and saw me today on a days notice. Got the form filled out and mailed in today with the medical exam stub. The eye doc gave me one those depth perception tests for fun and I got 7 out of 9 right away, but I struggled on the last two. I only got them by guessing which ones sort of looked different.

I did make copies of the SCL form just in case; do I need to give a copy to the doctor completing the medical exam? Since that form has been filled out, is the eye test at the medical waived?

At my medical exam i didn't have it done yet, nor did they ask for it, they just gave me the basic one anyways. You will just send it up to the state review Doc.

Okay here is my problem. When I went to the eye doctor he tested me and found 20/20 vision in each eye and both eyes together, he noted such on the form that was set to the state.

When I look at standard eye charts (the ones that hang on the wall) from 20 feet I can?t see the 20/20 line, but I can see the 20/25 line. I?m not sure what my issue is, but I just can?t see the dang thing clearly.

My question is, since my eye doc certifies me at 20/20 (and communicated such to the state via the official form), does it matter if I can see the wall hung eye chart at the medical exam (which I am doing on Tuesday)?

I would really be bummed to miss out on this because I can?t see the eye chart at the MD?s office, but I can see the one at my optometrist.

It would assume that they would trust your eye doctor, but who am i:cry:

I tried to find the number of the Doc. who reviews everything, but i don't know what i did with it. you can call the state board up north and ask them about it, more then likely they will give you the Doc's number and you can ask him yourself.

So...look (no pun intended) there IS indeed a depth percetion test...and you can't cheat on it..so I feel ok telling you about it. You will accomplish it at some point. Maybe the same weekend as your PAT, etc. There are a series of items you look at in the "special" machine designed by really smart eye doctors and you tell the proctor which one is closer. it takes all of about 8 seconds...and then you move on..

good luck

at first i thought you where talking about at the academy, but i realize that you ment during the application process they test depth perception... i do not think that they tested me at my PAT or at any other testing. interesting...

Dipmo:

I to had the same problem as you. When I went to my physical the officer conducting the eye test said i had 20/40 and i needed to have it corrected. I knew my eyes were better but on the 20/20 line i missed one each time. When we moved over to the 20/40 chart I got all letters with ease. I went to my eye doctor and he said I had 20/25 due to a stigmatism or something like that. He said I had no need for glassess and when I take my physical for the CHP it will be conducted by an doctor and there is no need for me to get glassess or contacts because the doctor will realise its just a minor imperfection with my eyes. When I went to my physical for the CHP once again they gave me 20/25, like you from far away I had trouble seeing the line and missed a few. At close range though I have 20/20. I asked the doctor if that would be ok to send to the CHP and she said yes, you don't need glassess. A week later I get notified by the state personal board that I need to have my vision corrected before I can move on in the process, and I had 3 weeks from the date of the letter to get it corrected or I will be dropped from the process. So I immediately went to a eye doctor and had a perscription written out along with a full eye physical to show my vision can be corrected to 20/20. There I was given a depth perception test to answer another question, but I do not believe it was needed because I did not take one during a CHP appointment. Anyways i faxed in both forms the perscription and the results of my eye test and they are allowing me to move on in the process.

What I suggest to you Dipmo is get a pair of glassess with 20/25 lenses wear those at your physical and you will save yourself alot of hassle.

I had that similar problem and had to get a doc's confirmation that I was indeed corrected from 20/40 to 20/20. For some reason, my medical exam did not test to see if i was corrected so the state made me send in more results. I never had to take any depth perception like you are all talking about. For those of you are are going, see you all Monday morning. Good luck.

So the medical exam either did not test your vision or showed you were not 20/20? Either way, did I interpret correctly that the state took your eye doc's certification over what happened at the medical.

Good luck on Moday, I hope to see you in September...

Thats correct. I asked at my exam if they needed to test me with my glass on (which I had purchased right after my PAT/vison test when I found that I could not pass the 20/20 portion) and they said no, that everything was fine. So apparently they did not actually say that I was corrected so the medical board made my send the results of my offical eye test from when I got my glasses for verification. Among other things, that is one of the reasons that I am in the May class and not the March one. I hate snail mail. But all said and done, I am VERY happy that I did not go in March. Things worked out much better this way. Best wishes to the rest of you in the process.
