View Full Version : What is the rule of a right turn on a traffic signal?

Recently, a friend of mine got a photo-enforced citation for making a right turn on a four-way intersection. According to him, he made a full stop, checked for any oncoming traffic and proceeded when there was no oncoming traffic and was safe to turn and there was no sign posted ?No Turn On Red?.

I usually do the same at the right turns and wait till it is safe to turn. And if there is a sign posted ?No Turn On Red?, then I wait for the light to turn green. So, should the drivers wait for the light to turn green regardless if there is a sign posted or not?

Thanks

Same thing happend to me two years ago. I also found out many of those cameras also are equipped with video should you try to fight the citation. Having said that I also think some of these cameras have a hair trigger. My fine was doubled because I was in a construction zone...yeah when I f%#* up I really do it right. I didn't come to a COMPLETE stop before making my turn....live and learn.;)

"sounds" like he did everything ok, BUT i am not an officer. also most of the lights that have cameras usually only allow right turns on green lights as the cameras are set to trigger if you cross a line when it is red. have him go back and look for a sign

You can make a right turn if the light is red and you STOP first without any problem. I have another one of the cameras about a block from where I live and make a right turn every night on my way home from work, many times when it's red. In my case two years ago I really don't recall if I stopped or not before making my turn. I do however remember writing a check for $349 to the city of Hawthorne like it was yesterday.

I'd say that's the key to it on photo-enforced intersections....make sure you come to a full and complete stop, not a "California stop" (i.e. roll through at 5-10 mph) before making the turn.

I've found that many people truly believe that slowing down, especially before turning right, is the same as a complete stop. I'd bet your friend rolled the turn.

Thanks all for responding. I am sure my friend must have not come to a complete stop. I told him to be careful next time and come to a complete stop behind the white lines. I think his fine is $381. Two years ago, my wife got cited for rolling the turn at a red light. Her fine was $271. BTW, the intersection she was cited at is next to a Starbucks

Thanks

hehe... Hawthorne and Inglewood are the right light camera capitals of the world, i used to work for McCormick ambulance and we would get blinded at night at every intersection.

Those lights are set to take a picture if you cross the limit line (prolongation of the lateral curb edge). i have never seen it go off while making a right, but it all depends on how they are set up, i guess. I have gotten 1 of those and had to shell out $380 bucks to the city of LA

And they try to BS everyone by saying the cameras were installed in the interest of safety.....yeah right:rolleyes:

Tell your friend to go and view the video, if he still believes that he came to a complete stop and that the ticket is unwarranted, he can fight it in court. I guarantee that he rolled through, our memories are often different from reality.
