View Full Version : KERN COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT
THE KERN COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT IS ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR DEPUTY SHERIFF TRAINEE UNTIL MAY, 31 FOR THE FEBRUARY 2007 ACADEMY.
It is a very good department to work for. You have to be at least 19yrs of age to apply.
You can apply at http://www.co.kern.ca.us/sheriff/
THIS MIGHT BE A GOOD OPTION IF THINGS DON'T WORK OUT WITH THE CHP OR WHILE YOU WAIT TO GET IN TO THE CHP. IT IS ALSO A GOOD OPPORTUNITY FOR YOUNG APPLICANTS TO GET A COUPLE YEARS OF EXPERINCE IN LAW ENFORCMENT AT AN EARLY AGE. Have a nice day!
Interesting fact: KCSO Sheriff/Coroner Mack Wimbish is a retired CHP Officer. He was the PAO in Bakersfield Area at the time he retired.

WOW...you chippies have a thing for running for Sheriff.....I guess you all want to end your careers with something you can be proud of!!!
HA...KIDDING......Fresno County is the same way with former CHP Capt. Cal Minor having recieved our Assoc. Endorsement.
You're a funny, funny guy, FP! Actually there DOES seem to be a pattern - we've had a handful of our retired ranks run for and/or serve as Sheriff in different places.....beside the above two, Ed Prieto (retired Sgt.) and Glenn Craig (retired Commissioner) come to mind immediately.

Mac,
I think Ed Prieto is a retired Captain. I think he was the Woodland Area commander when he retired and was elected sheriff. It happend just in time for CHP Captain Larry Hollingsworth to retire and take over as Assistant Sheriff of Yolo County. Let's not forget one of my former subordinates, Tom Sawyer who was PAO in Merced, resigned with 24 years on the job and served three terms as Merced County Sheriff. John Anderson is a retired Central Divison Chief and he is Madera County Sheriff. Anderson took a fall for DUI in Yolo County and then got re-elected sheriff in the next elelction. I think the Mariposa Sheriff, Roger Matlock, is former CHP. I am sure there are a bunch more. The sometimes sad story is that sometimes but not always, guys are medically retired from the CHP and then go on to law enforcement or high stress jobs and continue to draw huge disability pensions. Go figure..............

Hmmm....does a certain retired chief who is now chief of the airport police for a large metropolitan area come to mind???
My error about Prieto - I lost track of him after he was a Sgt. instructing motor school at the Academy.

Yeah, a name does come to mind and I am reminded of another Commander of Southern Division who has a history that is so bad that if you or I had it we would have ended up selling sandels at Payless but somehow he chugs along polishing his stars and other things...................................I am so glad I am retired................

That one never ceases to amaze me. Absolutely unbelievable. I don't know how he can possibly stand there and talk about "ethics" with a straight face. And you're right....if you or I were in his place, the only thing we'd be polishing is the grill top at the local fast food joint.

Thats one of the reasons that Mac Wimbish has come under fire.
From what I understand that Car was never supposed to be seen but someone (lacking a sense of humor) snapped a picture and thats what the KCSO get's remembered for.
The Kern County/Bakersfield area loves their law enforcement on the whole however, no matter what kind of bad publicity surfaces.

Absolutely true, Kern SO and the Sheriff had to eat some cold crow in light of the photo that was on TV, the newspapers and widely circulated on the Internet. Cute to us law enforcement types but some others found it less that "politically correct"

got nothing bad to say about Kern Co. Never worked with them, but I remember in the news about five years back, some teenagers got kidnapped on the LA side of the Grapevine, sexually assaulted, driven to the Kern Co side, Amber Alert goes out, animal control sees the car and follows to a dirt road, Kern SO goes in, takes care of business. Out in the sticks, you do what you got to do. I was told they put less than four deputies out on patrol and have a very large area to cover.

It completely escapes me how people fail to see the humor in such things. It was obviously just a joke - people need to lighten up and pull the rubber band out of their arses.
OTOH, I'm surprised that Sheriff Joe Arpaio over in AZ hasn't co-opted those stickers for his patrol cars! That ol' boy runs himself a HARD-core county over there! I tip my hat to him for sticking by his guns and not kowtowing to all the hand-wringers.

As I recall the actual sticker wasn't the big issue, the sheriff (according to the news) lied about it being real. He originally claimed it was photoshoped. They harped on the alleged lie more than the decal.

Mac,
The last time I looked at Sheriff Joe's website I was tickled to see that they were hiring. That is Maricopa County, AZ if anyone wants to work in a county where the Sheriff does not molly coddle prisoners. Bolgna sandwiches and Kool Aid, pink underwear and a flouresent "Vacancy" sign in front of Tent City, sometimes called the county jail in the Arizona desert. When they complained about being hot, he reminded them of the troops in Iraq wearing combat BTUs and ballistic vests in that sh-t hole and told them they had nothing to complain about. Hooo Ahhh
Now ask me who is arresting Coyotes transporting illegals in Arizona since that is illegal in Arizona and he is arresting the illegals for conspiracy based on the same law. He has a posse of over 3000 volunteers to help.

He's apparently being sued by some of the illegal immigrant activist groups over his enforcement, and I absolutely loved his quote when asked about it....it was something along the lines of "Do they think I give a rat's ass? I get sued everytime I sit down to go to the bathroom!". Sheriff Joe has some cojones, I like the guy!
