About a year and half ago I was fortunate to purchase the original 1982 CHP Prototype Mustang unit #851963. This car is also the original Ford Prototype Mustang provided to the CHP/Motor Transport for testing and evaluation February 1982 by Emil Lauffler of Ford Motor Company who was the head of the new Severe Service Package Mustang program. Based upon the testing and evaluations with this Mustang an order for 406 1982 Ford Mustangs for pursuit and patrol duty was placed with Ford Motor Company. Not only is this car the first CHP Mustang but is also the first Ford Mustang Police car. I have had numerous conversations with Mr. Lauffler about this car and with the CHP person in charge of testing/evaluation of this car at Motor Transport. The CHP person is no longer with the CHP but is alive and well in Texas.

After the testing, evaluation and dog and pony showing of this car across California the car was equipped for high speed EVOC training at the Academy. This car is the first of only 5 Mustangs used for EVOC training at the academy. The car still retains many of the unique features from EVOC service including the roll cage, harness's, siren, rear seat removal and other unique features.

I have included a link to a photo album showing some of the early prototype pictures, EVOC service pictures and pictures of the car when I received the car in November of 2008 from the longterm previous owner. The car was retired from CHP service in 1985 with extremely low mileage. In many of the pictures I have of the car when in EVOC service there are the same 2 officers in the pictures. I have the names of the officers however per forum rules I am not posting their names. I understand both are retired with one of the officers now deceased. I would like to speak with the retired officer in the pictures to see what he remembers about my car when in service. Please PM me if you are able to help me contact this officer.

In the pictures you can see many of the unique features of this car that are only on this car to include a black interior, full roll cage, right hand mount whip antennae, rocker moldings and more. There are also pictures of the different paint schemes on the car. The final paint scheme is standard CHP issue at the time when the car was in EVOC service.

Any additional pictures anyone may have from the period or other information that they would care to share is appreciated to document this piece of CHP and Ford Motor Company history. I will continue to gather information and period correct parts to begin the prototype appearance restoration of the car.

I look forward to hearing from you and wish to thank you for any help you are able to offer concerning this special CHP Mustang!
