Firefighter cuffed for refusing to move rig
Tuesday, February 23, 2010

MONTECITO, Calif. -- The California Highway Patrol is investigating why a firefighter was handcuffed for refusing to move a fire engine from a freeway in Santa Barbara County. CHP Capt. Jeff Sgobba says the incident on Feb. 15 was rare, regrettable and embarrassing.

The confrontation took place in Montecito when CHP officers responded to a freeway crash that caused minor injuries. Sgobba says arriving Montecito firefighters blocked the fast lane with an engine to shield responding authorities from traffic.

Sgobba says a CHP officer ordered the rig moved and handcuffed a fire battalion chief who refused. The firefighter was released when a CHP supervisor arrived a short time later.

No charges have been filed.

Without knowing all the details, this is an embarrasing incident. I wish we could be professional adults and work together. Very bad time to cuff a freaking fireman when we are justifying our jobs. Work it out later. Looks like a case of stubborn man syndrom. Whos #@$% is bigger. Again, very embarrasing for the CHP and the Fire Department.

There's a lot more to the story than is provided in the media.

I am sad that this had to happen to a couple of great organizations. This was a VERY isolated incident and should not reflect badly on either organization. It is being dealt with internally.

I don't know about the rest of you folks, but I sure will sleep easier tonight knowing that this brave officer has brought the long arm of the law upon that ruthless road bully menace of a Battalion Chief!
