There's also a very cool CHP funny car dragster, which is (or at least up until recently was) owned by a retired CHP Sergeant.

It would be cool to see a CHP Nascar racecar.

I agree. If the various branches of the Armed Forces can sponsor a car in either Busch or Nextel, why couldn't we sponsor one too? Obviously there are cost issues associated with sponsoring a car, but I've always thought it'd be a cool recruitment tool to have a NASCAR ride with a CHP paint-scheme. Maybe full-time sponsorship is cost-prohibitive but every once in a while a team will deviate from their main sponsor to fly the colors of a second-tier sponsor...

Aside from the fact that the Department would probably be forced to sponsor a Ford in Nascar, there are real life issues to ponder before the crystal palace boys sponsor a race car.

Officers are carrying guns which are unsafe and substandard. The "new and improved" vests have not been issued to all areas. Our radio system is a joke. We have better communication car to car and to dispatch using cell phones. I hear from our area rep. that the Department is going to spend 500 million upgrading to the Chipper system. Motorola doesn't make our radio heads ny longer so now we have to cannibalize our runouts to keep our units equipped.

I'd rather spend money on items like these than on Nascar. Besides, how many fans are going to cheer against the CHP car? If you think fans boo Jeff Gordon, wait unitl they get to applaud a CHP sponsored race car slamming into a wall at Talladega at 200 MPH!

Very true Vince. The radio reception in our area is extremely poor. Rather than have that nice new "Helo" for Commish Brown, the Department should consider sending out weapons that do not break down, vests that stop bullets, and radios that really work.

I agree 100%. I would hope no one in their right mind would ever suggest spending our budget money on NASCAR or anything else other than the things addressed above. I'll say it again so it isn't overlooked... MONEY SHOULD NOT BE DIVERTED FROM THE IMPORTANT THINGS ADDRESSED ABOVE JUST TO PAY FOR STUPID CRAP.

Now, I seem to remember another thread recently where this philispohical discussion of how money is to be spent was addressed. I'll touch on it briefly, again...

There is grant money available. If it must be spent on idiotic crap that no one cares about, so-be-it; the feds and the state say you (we) can have X number of $$, as long as it is spent in accordance with the provisions of the grant. And, yes, often times those provisions = crap. If that means plastering our decals on a racecar, so be it. You (we) are not allowed to take grant money set aside for recruitment, public affairs, etc. and apply it to new radios, better vests, faster cars, computers, whatever, irrespective of how sensible that may be.

Look at the big picture. Sometimes, we have to agree to spend $1.5 million on rubber chickens and t-shirts because deep within that grant, in some obscure provision, there is also $300k tucked away that we can use for CORE overtime, or whatever. Soooo, we can cut off our nose to spite our face and say "If I can't use your millions of dollars for stuff I need then screw you, I don't want your money" but if we do, someone else will take it and we stand to lose out on the small portion that would truly benefit us.

good gravy. should we make a new rule? "until the california highway patrol is perfected inside and out, all "it would be cool if" talk shall immediately cease and desist."

better?

No.........it would be awesome if we had a CHP spacecraft because then we could fly around and have better response times and reduce the MDR.

I like when they let people drag race their personal vehicles against police cars from various departments at the drag races at Infineon. I think it's cool that they provide a place for people to do that. The police officers seem to like it as well, if for no other reason than bragging rights! The cops usually win, or at least they did when I went.

That is cool. The CHP doesn't allow that, however, I heard about a couple of motors that were on their bikes on that track before....going as fast as they could....that would be really neat.

Hopefully, my last post wasn't taken out of context. My point was that there is money given to us by people who love to throw it around that would allow us to take the "wouldn't it be cool if" and turn it into reality. We wouldn't have to touch the funds designated for perfecting our imperfections.

I do think the NASCAR thing would be a cool recruiting tool. It's a national spectacle and reaches the proper 18 to 32 year old demographic - I mean, name one NASCAR fan who couldn't benefit from our dental plan? Never thought about the spaceship thing, but that sounds even better. No one else has one of those...;)

Re: the actual race coming up, I know the Napa Area works a TON of OT during the whole NASCAR weekend. It is good times. About 5 or 6 years ago, a couple of us got to drive the track in our patrol cars. There was a crash at the end of the drag strip (during a local drag race, NOT a NASCAR event) and we were working OT. We responded... you know, to make sure all was OK. Of course, we had to get there quickly, hitting our apexes, etc.

Pretty much right on. It is done for the Palo Alto Concours, which was again held this weekend.
Here is a reply from another forum in regards to it.
The Cayman as well as a Cayenne Turbo S were on loan from Carlson Porsche for the Saturday Concours drive to the coast. This is a charity event. These are the escort vehicles. Temporary fully functioning CHP cruisers, lights and all.
The CHP and the dealership have been kind and supportive in donating their time and resources for a good cause. The drive is held every year the day before the car show. The white doors, including CHP emblems are actually peel and toss magnetic stickers.
