I have been thinking of going to a shooting range. I have never fired a weapon before and would like to try it. I don?t know much about guns. Any shooting ranges you would like to recommend in the Bay Area and word of advise for a first timer would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
GS

P.S ? Please no Dick Cheney jokes:smile:

I've been to Reed's in San Jose, just south of the airport. I had no prior experience to compare it to, but I thought they were great. They did a class on what we'd need to know before we went in, and kept an eye on us newbies. I had only shot a bb gun before and was therefore very concerned about poor accuracy, but found shooting a real gun to be much more accurate. I was also suprised with how relaxing it was.
I haven't been back for one reason: on the CHP website in the recruiting area, they have some officer's stories. One officer originally thought she'd be a poor candidate because she'd never fired a gun, but she then realised it meant she had NO bad habits when it came to firing a gun! GREAT attitude!

pup, though I've been shooting longarms for a while now, that's one reason I actually held back on taking pistol lessons. That and money, of course, plays a role.

If I were in your boot's, I would at least buy a grip strengthening device prior to arrival and use it. GRIP, ROTATE, PUSH: HOOAH!

On the SFPD's website, they suggest that you squeeze a tennis ball every hour. I'm assuming it's to get you to be comfortable with the first double-action trigger pull.

It's more to give you the overall grip strength to deal with holding and shooting the gun for the thousands of rounds you'll shoot during Academy training. Anybody can deal with trigger pull - it's doing it over and over and over again while holding onto that heavy iron that'll wear you down.
