View Full Version : May Academy Class Speculation
If you don't know anything about this Department, know this: Rumors are prevalent. They're usually not too accurate, but they are everywhere. Sounds of "I heard" and "someone said" echo in these forums. Many rumors are based on good intentions, although they often cause more stress and anxiety than they are worth.
Rumors I've personally heard regarding the May Academy Class include:
* There are only 22 Cadets scheduled
* There are only 30 Cadets scheduled
* It will be pushed back 30 or 60 days
* The class will be about 90 Cadets
* A bunch more I didn't pay attention to
I do not have a magic ball or a direct line to Sacramento or the State Personnel Board, but we can separate some of the facts from fiction. The May 29th class is on for that date and is not getting pushed back; the goal is to have a class of 180 Cadets. Any speculation on class numbers at this point is at best an educated guess. There are only a few people in the State that are in a position to make accurate projections and I am certainly not one of them.
While it may be true that as of today, 22, 30, or whatever lowball number of applicants have received invitations, make no doubt the number who will receive invitations in the coming weeks will be much greater. Invitations will be going out until at least Friday the 26th at 1700 hours. There are a lot of applicants who are in the hiring process that will be cleared in the next 16 days.
Pure, uneducated, SWAG by dw: 110 Cadets.
I guess my real question is from the applicant's perspective, who cares? If you got a spot, great -- why does it matter if you will have 30, 60, or 200 classmates? It's not like there is anything different to prepare for. Let the guys and girls in Sacramento sweat this stuff, those going into the class have much bigger problems ahead.
Good info, DW. Rumors are definitely prevalent, and straight answers are rare. I'm sure some of the applicants here appreciate you taking the time and effort to straighten things out. Gimme yer 100 Form!

That's exactly what I'm sayin'. My attitude would be, I couldn't care less who else shows up, as long as I'M there!!!

I'd have to say I'm on the same page. The only rumor I really cared about was whether or not the class was getting pushed back long enough for me to have a shot at getting in instead of staying at my current lame job for the summer!

Another bit of encouraging info for all those going through the hiring process. It seems that the log jam at the background process is going to be eased in the near future. It was rumored a couple months ago that Division offices were going to be pulling people from Area offices to assist in background investigations. The inquiries for interested people to fill those positions have started at my office. I'm speculating that within the next month or so the background process will be running full speed ahead.

i agree these rumors are ridiculous. did you guys here the reason they are delaying the may 29th class is so that they can move the academy to san diego. honest truth. i heard it from a friend who knows someone in san diego that talked to someone in sacramento.

I thought we were contracting with Nevada to run the Academy??? Hmmm, I guess San Diego it is.

thanks for the straight answers dw, it helps to alleviate a little extra stress, and you're right, as of now, I could care less who or how many are going to be there, I just want to go and get on with it. Now that I've officially quit my job there's no turning back, and it's just keep preparing until I show up at 0730 on the 29th. So thanks again.

Personally, I would rather have 200 in my class than 30. It would be much easier to get lost amongst everyone.

Makes it easier for those that shouldn't slip through to slip through though.
Just when I thought the Highway Patrol was getting predictable, I find myself corrected. What was I thinking, after all? I'm the one that's not supposed to believe it until I see it.
Well folks, looks like the way things have been done for years has changed. Invitations to the May class (yes, still on for May 29th) have been cut off. Reliable rumor has it that all offers for the May class have been mailed and any future invitations will be for the September class.

Yeah... So, what I said about not believing it until I see it...
Seems invitations will continue to go out until next Friday as I originally described. There were a few days there when they were being held, but as of today, things have changed back to "normal".

From a training stand point I would much rather have a smaller class of cadidiots then a large class. Also like someone else said, the turds of the class can't as easily play gray man.
"Trim the fat" and train the most motivated. Instill competition amongst class mates, but preach team work and watch how great of an enviroment will be created by the class and instructors.
The anticipation of a being a cadidiot again.........
