Is this a good thing or a bad thing. True, the guy was convicted...but MANSLAUGHTER??? The Bakersfield Californian has a few articles on this case. Another example of how sleazy defense attorneys work. Their excuse is that it was "heat of passion" because Officer Maxwell was mean to the guy. Does that give the right to go out shooting people?

It is not appropriate to call this outcome a conviction. It's more like released. Maxwell was shot in cold blood. The murderer is now walking on the streets as a free person as you read this. You can thank the 9th circuit court for this one. Just goes to show you society is changing it's opinion of law enforcement as a whole. "Heat of passion"? Gimme a break.

Gee. I wonder why LE agencies across the state are having trouble finding qualified people who have an interest in a law enforcement career.

So this sets a great precedent......

Get mased my an officer "for not doing anything wrong" (of course) --> shoot a cop in cold blood --> claim the heat of passion defense --> do some jail time --> resume your life like nothing happened while an officer's family suffers a lifelong loss.

One more nail in the coffin of "Victims' Rights"

Unbelievable :!: :!:

I quit being amazed by such verdicts a long time ago. Still pissed off, but never amazed anymore.

My condolences to Officer Maxwell's friends and loved ones; my utmost contempt to the liberals of the 9th Circuit, and my middle finger to the sleazy defense tactics used to effectively acquit a cold-blooded murderer. If you want to see an institution in the throes of decay, look no further than our so-called "justice system."

The lesson here is: Kiss the violators' butts. It will go something like this:
"Oh, Mr. Dirtbag, Ima, Please excuse me for inconveniencing you. It's really MY fault that you were driving 90 mph, through a school zone, on the wrong side of the road while drunk. I hope I haven't taken up too much of your valuable time. Perhaps I could refer you to Dr. Reefer up in Berkely who will sign your 215 card so you can properly medicate yourself after such an agregious violation of your civil rights that I have just committed. Rest assured, I'm turning in my badge and gun as soon as I get back to the station. I'm soo sorry if I offended you kind sir."

Give me a friggin break. The sad thing is that the juries apparently expect this kind of crap. Remember, the jury is 2 elderly do-gooders, and 10 people who weren't smart enough to get out of jury duty.

As for me, there's only one question that should've been asked in this trial: Do you want your justice regular, or extra crispy.

RIP, Officer Maxwell, knowing that this guy will, most assuredly, bring himself into the spotlight of another officer somewhere down the line. And in the end, he will get what's coming to him...in this life or the next.

Ditto. In the USA, the violators have more light shined on their rights than on the victims, families and the people that have to strap on bullet resistant vests and carry a gun to protect themselves. Its backwards, im not saying that all violators be stoned to death (well, maybe depending on the offence) but come on, common sence isnt even being excersized 80% of the time. And all those poor poor state and federal prisoners....boo hoo. Its backwards and upside down.

Mac,

Your statement could not have been put any better. Everyone who reads your post should pay close attention to the words and what is going on in our "justice system" (if you can call it that).
