I'm a huge Mustang buff, I've always loved the fox bodies. My question is, why was the driver's side spotlight red? There's already one in the middle so why need another one? Why not make the spotlight white?

Which one accelerates faster, the above Mustang or the Camaros?

Thanx

The reason why there red is to provide more waring power when rolling code 3. For example when your rounding a corner. Also you will notice that all CHP slick tops have a red spot including the foward face red.

Above mustang 0-60= 6.4 seconds
Current CHP Camaro 0-60= 5.6 seconds

Above mustang top speed= 145
Current CHP Camaro top speed=159

Our patrol cars (slick tops) had left side red spotlights long before the center-mounted reds ever came into being. It's a carry-over from that, plus it allows increased visibility of the forward-facing red because it's movable. For example, if you park your car diagonally or sideways at a road closure, you can turn the left-side spot in that direction to display the red light - you don't have a lightbar for visibility, and your rear deck lights aren't necessarily visible from that angle.

Cool, thanks for the info. Are your current slick-top Crown Vics still setup this way with the driver's side spotlight being red?

All of us in my RP have slick tops and a couple of the guys changed out the red spot for a white one. The new center light is a red and blue LED light which is highly visible. We have no street lights out here so having two spots is better than two reds. I haven't changed mine out but I have never used the red spot because of the new center red/blue combo.

Does anyone know when red spotlights begun to be used ? I have a color pic of a 1955 Buick Century but I guess red spotlights were used long before.

YM:
Are Officers allowed to make changes to their cars like the spotlight? I expected they would have to be all the same for liability reasons. I got my butt chewed for changing one of my fire truck's strobes from red to amber.

I did the same thing to my car. No one ever said anything. I went on vacation and when I came back someone had changed it. Don't know policy well enough to answer that. Bet you KNOW YM stays up late at night studying policy for that little tid bit that could get him out of a jam. He works an RP for goodness sake. He's got all the time he needs.

I personally hate the red spot on the driver's side. I work a lot of swing shift where I need all the light I can get especially for turning through the center dividers full of sand/dirt/rocks/lizards. Anyway I was going to change mine to white and our Auto Tech told me if I did I would find myself in the Sgt's Office. He told me if I wanted a white spot on the driver's side, to drive a lightbar car.

Tell your ASM you're going to remove all the bulbs from his lights in the bay and he'll have to make do with what he has instead of making it better. Then unplaug his air compressor. I did that with the River Rat and no one said nothing. You shouldn't have asked. You should have just did it and waited for someone to say something. What are they going to do? 100 form comment? Who gives a crap. A good SGT would tell the ASM not worry about it and mind his own business. His business is not understanding officer safety and it's not his ass on the line when you trying to see that meth head dance around like a fart in a skillet, trying to get his gun and/or hide his dope.

The time to do this is when you have a SGT who is pro-officer and kind of marches to his own beat. You ratate SGT's on your 100 form, just wait for the month he's evaluating you.

It's easier to ask for foregiveness than to seek permission.

Yeah, our ASM is something. He complains to the Sgts if he has to replace the brakes on your car more than once every 25,000 miles. He complained about me one day and I asked him "Who cares? are you paying for the brake pads"? His response was no, but it caused him work. Uh, yeah, thats what you are here for stupid. Without us burning up the brakes, you wouldn't be employed. Anyway, I'll climb down off of the big box now

the red spotlight problem could be fixed with corner strobe lights, it would give us the visability we need in intersections / traffic control situations.

I agree, and it's something I think is LONG overdue on all of our cars - not just the slicktops. The corner strobes increase your visibility exponentially. Maybe it's something somebody should take to the Association as an occ safety caucus item.

I'm sure someone could make a stink about changing out that red spot. Legally, there's no issue since the VC only requires one solid facing red light on all emergency vehicles (all the other lights are just fluff). The center spot satisfies that requirement. As I pointed out though, we have no street lights on our beats, have few to no parking lots with afterhours lighting, and generally need as much functional lighting as we can get. I should also point out that our vehicles are only standardized to a certain degree. We have slicktops without cages, slicktops with cages, lightbars configured as such, etc. And why does a lightbar car get a white driver-side spot and not a slick top when they both have other forward facing solid red lights? I'd have to read the motor transport manual but I'm sure there's something in there that prohibits modifications. The interpretation is what's a modification? I don't think replacing spot qualifies. Especially when it makes sense for officer safety.

You mean like that blue light?

I think ka4993 was relating to the strobe light that can be placed with in the corner of the headlight.

How do you put photgraphs in like above?

I can answer because I asked YM and he gave me the answer. Go to photobucket.com and creat an account. It's free and self explanatory. After you creat an account, you download pics from your PC, highlight the URL created at photobucket and paste it into a message.
