Tonight while returning home from dinner out, we met an SUV with a rack on the top decorated abundantly with a lot of Christmas lights of all colors. Before we even met at the stop sign, I saw the blue lights on the top and thought, "oh, no," with hubby commenting on how nice it looked! Am I right in believing that no one but LE can use blue lights in any manner? Not only that, but the entire display takes one's attention off their driving. I think it might look nice while parked at home in the driveway, but that's about it. Wish I had a pic and a plate number.

No, you're not wrong. I always feel bad about writing these people...as they are just trying to spread their Christmas spirit.

...which is exactly why we are given that wonderful gift called "discretion" in our job.

White or amber lights to the front, red or amber to the rear, with the exception of the back-up lights and license plate light. Truck drivers try and get sneaky with the side lights, but there are restrictions on that too. That's what the little DMV handout book used to say.

Also, could be a distraction to others.

So in general, I'd say it's illegal and a bad idea, no matter how good the intentions.
