Hi Everyone,
I am new to this Forum. My name is Ken, I own a Mustang SSP and have had it for approx. 8yrs. After a friend got me interested in his mustang ssp resto, I now am looking into restoring mine. After doing some research, we found that I have a pretty rare '89 Mustang SSP SMPV (E435300). I was told it was stationed in the Banning, Ca area and used for commercial enforcement. It seems there is a wealth of knowledge on this forum and am hoping someone has some info or pics to help me with my restoration. Any help would be great. My big areas of interest are the interior area, shotgun mounting(is defferent than the regular B&W), did it have a CB radio for the truckers, and any luck of what officer(s) were assigned to my car.

Here's an in-service shot of Ken's car:

Updated research shows it went into service at the Central Division on 08/07/90 with 100 miles on the clock. It's the first SMPV Mustang to surface and be recognized and what a rare one it is.

It has also has had a pretty interesting post service life. Ken relayed on another forum that prior to his ownership, the car had been stolen and recovered within 2 hours but that's all the time the theives needed to liberate the doors, front sheetmetal and the entire interior from it! Thankfully the owner at the time liked the car so much, he restored all the missing parts to keep the car alive and now Ken has begun a proper restoration...hopefully coming soon to a car show or event near you.

I am helping Ken with the restoration of his car. I am restoring my CHP mustang as well. My car is close to being finished. I now have more time to help Ken on the restoration of his rare SMPV. One of the things that we would like to find the answer on is the fact that his car shows (as seen by the picture) that it has no spotlights and has no antenna on the left rear quarter panel. The car has spotlight holes but it does not have a antenna hole in the quarter panel. Any help on this car will be greatly appreciated......Rich

Did the Assignment Card indicate that #5300 had been put back into service as a regular patrol vehicle or other use? It could be that the spotlights were added after the CHP sold the car. The fact that there's an actual in-service picture of the car without the lights would motivate me, if I owned it, to restore the car to the same configuration as when the picture was taken.

Well to add to the time frame. The prior owner I got the car from had bought the car from a dealership on Dec '94. That would give my car a little over 4yrs of in-service time. The dealership he got it from seems to sell a lot of prior law enforcement cars. Good chance the dealership pick it up from an auction to make some money. If thats the case then that would limit the change of hands with the car and the prior owner loved it was a mustang and expressed no interest in restoring the car to the SSP. I feel the spotlight marks came from CHP.
I love a good puzzle game.

If the prior owner of your car bought it from Senator Ford in Sacramento, it was through some kind of an arrangment where that dealership was working with the CHP to sell refurbished runouts. Not sure if Senator bought them or were selling them on consignment but in the early '90s, many ex-CHP Mustangs came in to civilian hands through that channel.

I agree with your conclusion that the spotlights were probably installed by the CHP at some point in it's service life.

Here is a picture of another Blue and White SMPV with the spot lights just to give you and idea of what it would have looked like if your SMPV was equipped with spot lights. (How did I get that all that to fit in one sentence? LOL) However this one is a little older than yours

That '85 Mustang was one from the first batch of SMPVs made and it was actually painted silver:

Those 5" chromed spots are just about identical to the ones found on the current PCF units. Also note it's equipped with dealer plate frames...yep, Senator Ford.

Just to add on the dealership, the prior owner said he got it from Down Town Ford in Sac. He mentioned they had several SSP cars and were adding pin stripping and stuff to make the cars look like, as he described old style muscle cars.

Just checking to see if anyone has any info on my unit #5300 Blue Mustang SMPV. It's been a while since I posted so just checking again to see if anyone has come across any info, photo's of my car or ANY Mustang SMPV's.
I am looking for any info regarding the lay down shotgun rack. I am in the middle of my restoration and am at a road block regarding the shotgun mount. I know the radio for my car was the GE Rangr and the holes mounting near the glove box are standard for the B&W Mustangs.

Any help is greatly appreciated.
