My uncle forwarded this address to me about texting while driving in Utah. I thought although its long, it should be here too. I think it's great that the kid is owning up to his mistakes.

This is a good video for young drivers, and for all drivers. I forwarded the link to several people, and the first one to respond was my sister whose husband texts while at the wheel. Since he is in his late 60's and half blind (and sister recently T-boned and killed in a collision when she ran a stop sign, stopped in the intersection, and was struck by a garbage truck), wouldn't you think he would use a little common sense? Anyway, she probably won't get him to even watch it!

I believe someone else has said it before, but common sense is not very common. This whole texting thing has taken the world over. I know 60 and 70 year olds who never used to even use thier cell phones, and are now texting back and forth, full conversations. It's like the whole world has moved away from the personal aspect of a conversation. I would agree, every teenager should see something like this prior to getting their license, but it really comes down to parenting. Cops can't be everywhere at all times. I definitley think there should be some kind of texting/cell phone questions on the driver test at DMV. A kid on my football team I coach failed his driver's test for answering his phone WHILE driving during his test. :hitwall::hitwall::doh:

Yep, that was my old signature. "Common sense is the least common of all the senses." I don't know the author, but not me!

Driving = Privilege - You take that for granted, your privilege should be GONE until you can articulate why you should be granted the privilege back. I know, I know.. a guy can dream right?

That is a really good video. I forwarded it onto my nieces and nephews who are teenage drivers. I haven't texted and driven...and don't plan to start now...I wish I could pull over those who do....

I agree with you. Last weekend I was coming back from the movies in Hayward, ca on 580 about 11:50pm. I was in the passengers seat then all of a sudden I seen a blue four door pass us up really fast and doing unsafe lane switching with no blinker then a red four door passes us up doing the same but swerving side to side almost hitting the cars she was passing. But as she passed us I happen to look into her car because I seen her coming from behind us in the mirrors and we were in a jeep so I can look down into her car. This young female was texting and looking down at her phone the same time she changed lanes the first time!:hitwall:She had a passenger also so I wonder did she say anything to the driver. I said to my guy " Man I wish I was an officer right now cause boy I would call in for the first car and pull the second over and give her a** a bunch of s**t for reckless driving and speeding and texting at the same time!!!" :evil:I was so angry because she endangered so many lives because there were so many cars packed up and driving in the same spot.

Well of course I wouldn't have walked up to her and started cursing her out, I would have gave her a Long lecture on safety and what could have happened and does she understand why she is receiving these citations.... I know never mix your emotions with work.

You know while it wasn't texting, I did see a nice young lady prove the cell phone laws don't need to apply to her. I was off duty driving home when this young lady pulled out of a driveway directly into my lane of travel requiring the ample application of brakes in my vehicle. I'm not one to hold a grudge, but I did notice she may have been distracted by the telephone glued to her left ear, held there with her left hand. In her right hand, was a cigarette, but it was affixed to the steering wheel and I give her props for not dropping the ash while spinning the wheel around. It was a Dodge Neon, a smaller compact car, yet there were probably 1500 lbs worth of occupants (5 people all about 300 lbs apiece). The car looked as though it was laboring to get moving, so I just followed patiently.

Next, she pulls up to a stop sign. Mind you, this must be one of those new fangled stop signs that she apparently expected to turn green. I say this because she sat there. And sat there. And sat there. Not wanting to wait for the second comming, I gave a polite little tap of my horn, to remind her that it was a sign, not a signal. Well, what happened next amazed me. She carefully grabbed her cell phone with her cigarette in hand and plastered it to her right ear while simultaneously reaching a chubby little middle digit out of the left side window and waving it generously at me. As if this wasn't amazing enough, she maintained this act of thanking me all while turning the car left in the intersection with what had to have been very muscular legs. At least I hope they were her legs.

<sigh> Oh well, some people just don't get it. Thank-you for letting me share my story.

Lecture or summons (citation). Never both.

I'm still all for a new law that includes confiscation of hand held devices of any sort employed while driving. Should be held for five days, then the miscreants can get them back after paying their $1,000 (or +) fine. I know this would up the costs of enforcement and storage, and probably a whole new set of lawsuits, but somehow these dunderheads need to get the message. Who do they think they are, out there endangering everyone else so they can act stupid on the road? Get 'em where it hurts.

CivvieInNY-
I like your tag line :) I appreciate what the CHP officers do on a daily basis. They never know what they might get when they pull someone over. Tough job, thanks for doing it! :)

Ive seen plenty and heard officers give lectures to make a person understand what he/she did that was wrong and why it was a violation, usually though after that it is a warning that follows behind instead of a citation. I know I have received one years ago and it did help. Also been in a passenger seat while the driver has been lectured too but ended up getting a citation.:confused:

My 41 year old daughter is addicted to her blackberry and just got a ticket in Sacto. I am going to send her the Utah video and hope she watches the whole thing.
