Posted here because not all of us are LEOs but I still wanna know what your profession is and if you listen to music to get you "pumped up".
I do security, on the way to work I listen to Metallica. Gets me hyped up, ready to stay awake (graveyard) and makes me remember how important my job is. On the way home I normally listen to talk radio, as it provides me news and makes me sleepy.

Nothing makes a guy feel older than realizing he's never heard of any of these artists.

For those deep thought times where I need to be creative, I listen to Jamaican music, generally talk radio (Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity...), and on those special occasions, anything Disco, or Shania Twain...

I work in the communications division and I like to listen to something upbeat when I'm on my in. Generally I come in at 0600 and it's kinda dead when I come in anyway. So I mostly listen to The Brian Setzer Orchestra. It's mostly fast, upbeat and there are lots of loud horns to wake my happy a$$ up when I've still got sleep in my eyes. I only live a few miles away from work and I'm usually wide eyed and ready to Jump, Jive and Wail when I walk into the building.

When I was in the Marines before my plane would leave the ground I always like to listen to Walk by Pantera. The beat and speed of the song really gets your blood flowing, also one of my favorite songs to work out to.
Recently Kid Rocks Warrior has been playing a lot on my ipod also. A free download which is really cool also. Here is the link for the free download.

I've found I'm actually happiest when I turn off the radio and listen to the sweet sounds of a diesel engine motoring me down the road. Or, when in the car, the low rumble of American V-8 power. Ahhh.

I prefer to listen to retro polka and maybe swtich it up with something from the bubblegum-acid-sesame street genere. It is a little known category but it puts a certain twist on my already twisted mind.
On the other hand, on the way home I will usually settle for a little calmer music such as Johnny Cash.

Country Music, that's the kind where you can actually understand what they are saying, right?
XM Channel 16, The Highway.
Led Zeppelin is still my favorite, though.
I don't need to get 'pumped up' before work...I need a clear head to make sure I have my game face on and all my stuff is up-tight...the first time I hit the lights, I get all the adrenaline I need based on the premise that each stop is waiting to go bad until I determine otherwise! i.e. internal motivators vs. external motivators. Is this the root of your question zanev?
I have noticed that my mindset changes the closer I get to the office before shift. I start running scenarios in my head and trying to get a feel for the pulse of the city/highway, how many people are out, weather effects on activity and traffic, etc...building the picture so I can keep the advantage. If there is music on in the car (Rage Against the Machine, Breaking Benjamin, Rush, Pink Floyd, Zep) it is largely unnoticed.
I like international news on the way home (weird).

...whenever possible, put on side one of Led Zeppelin IV.
Sorry, I should have explained for some of you 'Younger' listeners...back when Led Zeppelin was getting started, the CD's had two sides, and the best songs on Led Zeppelin IV were on side one...and the CD's were much larger...and they were black in color.

I'm a 80's chap myself. Quiet Riot, Journey, some Hall and Oats, Eddie Money and my personal fave... The Greatest American Hero theme song. Ohh yeah.. That's the one... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e9Q3orQhEcA
Besides country music, 80's (both rock and "new wave") and classic rock are my other two favorite genres. My wife complains that other than country, I don't listen to any music newer than about 1990 - and she's not too far off. I'm not a big fan of today's "rock" (at least the mainstream radio stuff). It's too generic and formulaic for me. The big record labels simply look at what's making the $$$, and keep cranking out crap that sounds exactly like it. I'll occasionally find a "new" (to me) song that I like and bring it up to her - at which point she'll invariably roll her eyes and say something like "That came out three years ago!" (the most recent example being "Clocks" by Coldplay).
Yze - Zep IV....now THAT'S music! (I can't find side two on my CD, though...it's all side one!)
I loves me some 80's stuff - B-52's, The Cars, Missing Persons, Wall of Voodoo, Men At Work, Thompson Twins, etc.

Quite the variation in tastes here, as expected really. I'd start to worry if there was a single theme.
I don't listen to music like I used to due to some hearing loss/nerve damage. It's just not as pleasant as it used to be. I still tune in a little, and when I do, the mode changes with the mood, and I have so many. I listen to big bands from the old era, rock from the 60's, 70's and 80's; Some country; not that much; soul from the 60's and 70's; The big change for me happened in 89, so there wasn't much of anything new after that. Was there anything really new from the 90's on?
Personally I don't get pumped up over music. Instead I see it as a method of relaxing your brain and taking a rest. There's nothing new; you know whats coming and your expectations are never disappointed. It's all very predictable, so I guess if you're listening to rollercoaster music it might prepare you for a wild ride.
I wanted to edit this to include an a comment: Rap is not music. Rap is an offensive, crude, and obnoxious form of poetry. Rap is like listening to one or two suspects carrying on in the back of your patrol car on the way to the station or county lock-up with some sort of beat playing in the background. Anyone riding with me that asks to insert a rap CD into my box is sure to be driven to the nearest jail to be with more befitting company.
Any questions?

Yup - I grew up listening to today's "classic rock" while it was still "modern rock"! Love the Eagles....along with Steely Dan and many others of that era/genre. I'm still a huge Van Halen fan after all these years, too - they will probably always hold a place as one of my all-time favorite bands (both the Van Halen and "Van Hagar" incarnations).

You are absolutly right. Rap is no more music than country western. CW is just slowed down rap with a bad geetar thrown in.
Oh wait...Rapture by Blondie was pretty good...and Transplants gets close to rap...and that Cash guy sometimes put something good out.
