During the summer, I am usually still awake past midnight. Every now and then, I would see reports of wrong way drivers on the CAD during the late hours. I always thought this would be a rare occurrence, but it seems to me like it occurs a lot here in Los Angeles. What are usually the causes of this? DUI? Oh also, any stories to share? =]

I did it once when I was 18, by complete accident. Not paying attention to "one way" signs at 1am I found myself making a turn and noticing parked cars facing me. Lucky me I was able to pull into a parking lot and turn my car around.
DUI and/or elderly.
(And the stories often end tragically.)

Southern MAIT actually did a study on this several years ago. The majority were:
The Elderly
DUI
Pursued vehicles (police pursuits)
Don't remember what the percentages of each were but I believe DUI was tops.

I saw 3-4 wrong way driver incidents on the CAD last night
About a half a dozen or so I've had were DUI. I've only had two elderly drivers. All but one were driving in either the carpool or #1 lane (fast lane). This is why I avoid driving in those lanes at night. The SR-118 freeway in the San Fernando Valley is notorious for wrong way drivers.

I was trained, and I told all of my trainees, children, family members, and anyone else that would listen, that you never drive in the fast or slow lanes at night unless you have too. The fast lane is the slow lane for wrong way drivers, and the slow lane is the shoulder for dueces and other idiots.

Crap, I-5 has only 2 lanes! Now what? Stratling?
Sage advice... I remember my FTO's all saying that to me!

There's no policy or pat answer on this one- it all depends on the type of roadway, time of day, and the specific situation. But stopping traffic and letting the errant driver cruise down a clear roadway until they reach the wall of stopped headlights is one good suggestion. Usually they crash before we can get there.
