It was my BI, (he left message) wants to set up initial. Ready, excited and optimistic. I truly want this more than anything, any advice?

Congrats! I received my call last Monday 4/10... my BI came to the house on Wednesday. We talked for about 4 hours and filled out paperwork. It was a very painless experience, I have been honest this entire time with all my paperwork, so It's just explaining myself. Good luck and stay in touch!

Only advice I would give at this time is to be completely honest. I have heard of too many people getting kicked out during the back ground process because they left something silly off of their packet. If you remember something you forgot update your BI on your initial interview and hope for the best.
Good luck!

Congrats darch. Just repeating what has already been said. Be honest, and be yourself. People that fail out of backgrounds usually withheld info or lied about something. Oh yeah and be patient. The investigation may take some time. Good luck.

My car doesn't even accomidate a front plate! Am I in violation? Is this something I should worry about? SERIOUSLY! You should know better than to joke with somebody who's in backgrounds!!! Sure doesn't take much to make us jump!

yes, in all honesty, it is required that you have a front plate. i doubt your BI would drop you for something like that, but you should still fix it.

Especially before you get to academy. I've read on here that cadets walk the parking lot looking for violations while learning the VC. Does anybody know if that's actually true or if it's one of those urban legend things?

You think that exhaust is decaf or regular?

It is absolutely a violation and you should probably just withdraw from the process now. ;)
Yeah, I'm kidding about withdrawing, but it is a violation and you should get a plate ASAP. I guarantee you there is a bracket available. Call your dealer. (What kind of vehicle is it?) You can even get a front plate bracket for a 'vette. It may require drilling a hole in the bumper, but it's possible.
By the way:
Display of License Plates
5200. (a) When two license plates are issued by the department for use upon a vehicle, they shall be attached to the vehicle for which they were issued, one in the front and the other in the rear.
...DMV issues two plates for passenger vehicles, so both must be displayed.

When I bought my car it only had one plate.....a couple of years ago I got a friendly reminder from a CHP Officer on my way back from a lacrosse game in Reno- he was pretty cool about it....even explained to me how I needed to get my speedometer recalibrated because even though I thought I was going 65 it must have been off because he had me going faster on radar ....... The overpriced piece of plastic I had to get for my jeep cost 40 or 50 bucks at a dealer.

What I'll do is go to the dealer, see what this device looks like, then go to the hardware store & poke around to find odds & ends to construct one myself. The manufacturer doesn't get to win for selling me a car in violation. Oh geez, what did I DO with the other plate???
Which brings me to another thing...window tint. My truck was sold to me with the back & back side (it's extended cab) windows tinted. Illegal, I guess? WHY ARE THEY ALLOWED TO SELL THEM LIKE THIS???????????????? If it's illegal, they are manufacturing and selling something illegal, then turning around and asking for boatloads of money to fix it? AND getting away with it? Reminds me of cooking meth. Reminds me of some gang 'owning' a neighborhood and demanding a cut from legit businesses to avoid being ransacked. Perhaps that seems extreme, it just comes across as a non-violent way to do similar crimes.
Hmmm, suppose I go to Toyota and show them that they sold me something illegal and demand they fix it on their dime!

from the way you wrote the window tint part it sounds like you are legal, also since you say that, that is how it came stock. It is illegal to have it on the windshield and the front passenger and drivers side windows. Anything further back is legal regardless of how dark, correct me if i am wrong on that, you just need to have two side mirrors to do that though.

No need for correction - you've got it right. Cool your jets on the tint, Pupdog - you're ok there....but you DO need that front license plate.
Actually, if you go to Toyota and show them the vehicle code section that says you're required to have a front license plate installed (and maybe make a little stink about it), they may give you the mounting hardware for free. Assuming that you bought it new from a dealership, their vehicle should be in compliance with the laws of the state of sale as driven off the lot. I've never seen a Toyota truck that didn't have a mounting location for a front license plate, if that's the vehicle you're talking about.

Yes, any tint rear of the driver is legal -- up to and including blacking out the windows, provided there is a right side mirror.

Sorry to change the topic back from the front licence plate/tinting dilemma, but I had a question more about the phone calls.
I waited about 6 months after I turned in my PHS to have my inital background interview and now it's been over a month and I haven't heard anything from my BI. My BI hasn't called or scheduled me for anything further or told me I wouldn't be moving on in the process. About a third of my references have recieved letters and none of the employers that I've asked have gotten letters or calls.
What could be the cause of this slow down? I keep reading that the goal for the next academy is 180 cadets and several of the members of this board are moving very quickly through the process (and I really am happy for them) but I'd also like to know what is going on with me. One of the best things about the CHP background process, I thought, was that they tell you why you were not selected, if that is the case. Does anyone have any reasons for this situation?
Just sounds like a backlog to me - if you get DQ'ed they'll tell you so.....not just leave you hanging indefinitely. Not everybody's BI is going to move along at the same pace. Hang in there.

Sounds perfectly normal to me... Although there is a push, cases still take time. Investigators still have vacations. A month with seemingly no progress is not out of the ordinary -- chances are there are things going on you're not aware of.

Well, I had the BI meeting (at my home), all seemed to go smooth. It took 1 week from the initial "the phone rang today." When I actually talked for the first time to my BI, he asked me repeatedly if I had ALL of the required documents on the list. Even after assuring him I did, he explained that many of the cases he was working did not have ALL of their docs in order, (especially transcripts from all colleges/schools attended). He seemed extremely frustrated by this, especially since they (the BI's) are under the gun to get cases worked for the big Academy class after May 29. According to him the Administration is still thinking about possibly delaying the May 29 Academy to have the next class at 180 Cadets. So have ALL your docs. ready w/ copies of all your diplomas for him or her to check out, compare, and take w/ them. It seems many applicants are under the impression that they get all their docs. ready when their BI calls them for the first time (acccording to my BI). Anyhow, my CVSA is next. BI says I should get the call for it soon (week or so). He also told me to prepare for "a stressful final interview," I hope he says that to all the applicants!?

MY BI told me the same thing. The final interview was a bit stressful as was the CVSA. The stress there is nothing compared to what we will experience at the academy. Good luck to you darch. Let us know how it goes.

I mailed my PHS in December. My references received letters in January. My BI said that he mails them out early since people sometimes take awhile to return the letters. Hang in there gofly. The wait is worth it. Good luck to you.
I have my initial interview with my bi on wednesday morning. I'm kind of bumed out because I suffered an knee injury last thursday and I won't know the extent of my injury until tomorrow.:biggrin:shock:ubt:
Good luck to the rest of you in the process.
