I am starting the application process and would like to know if anyone has first hand experience on how the MGIB works with the Academy?

what does MGIB mean?

I graduated last August and we got our MGIB. You will not get it each month you are in the academy, but toward the end of your stay you will fill out all the paper work and "IF YOU ARE , SO FORTUNATE TO GRADUATE" sometime during break-in you get a nice check for $5,000 +. You have to enroll in what ever college shows up at the academy. You have to pay for tuition, I think it was $400.00. Then your check arrives a few months later. Its a really good deal.

However, 30% quit or fail out of the academy! The question is: are you part of the 70% who make it, or the 30% who quit or fail. Only time will tell. I would say good luck, but it has nothing to do with luck, and everything to do with how prepared you are! So, before you go banking on a MGIB, you better hope you are not a soup sandwich, or even worse a "Springer"! The money will be there in the end! The question is: Will you?

Thank you for your help. I will be one of the 70% that pass and become one of the best. However, you have to register at the local CC does that mean that you earn your POST or just attended college? Thanks again.

Besides the 30% attrition rate at the Academy, you must overcome the application process first. I was told that approximately only 2% of all applicants make it to the Academy, so counting the attrition rate during the Academy that means only about 1.5% of all applicants will ever be assigned a badge number... and this doesnt even count making it through break-in!

Im not stating this to discourage anyone, but merely letting you know that you had better take things serious if you want this job. Like it was posted somewhere else, there are too many people on this board who talk about quitting, or dropping out of the process before they even see the gates to the Academy. This job takes a big commitment and is not for everyone, but if you want it bad enough it is obtainable... however, you cant be a quitter or uncertain, or you will never make it.

Glad to see another veteran joining the CHP. When I went on, most of us were Vietnam vets or served during that period. That went on until the mid seventies then we stopped getting vets in 80s. I am a little biased but I am pretty sure your military service will help you in the academy and the discipline you learned will be a big help. I am also glad to see you will be using your GI Bill benefits. I used mine and ended up graduating from Cal State Sacramento. I hope you will have money left after the academy that you can apply to college. Best of luck to you and always be proud of your military service!!

only 30%? ctc 1-06 is almost at 50% and I think 4-05 is too

30% is the traditional average. Some classes may have 50%, while others may only have 20%... it comes and goes like the tide. Same can be said for the 2% who make it to the Academy at all... Some testing cycles may have a higher percentage than others. A buddy of mine told me when he was a B.I. sometimes he would approve three or four applicants in a row, and other times reject three or four straight.

If there is currently a 50% attrition rate at the Academy it tells me one of two things. One, either they lowered the bar in the QAPs and they are sending lesser qualified applicants to the Academy, or two, people are not preparing and taking the Academy as serious as they have in years past. I just couldnt see the Academy being tougher than ever before... maybe as tough, but not tougher. As it has been stated numerous times, if they cant hack it in Camp Snoopy, we dont want 'em anyway...

I hope I don't get hammered for posting BEFORE I graduate...but I think I have met the intent of staying off of here for the purposes of the Staff Office. (Staff Officers, if not, please put my name on the board and let me know!)

The MGIB is a process that I personally have been very interested in correcting for the benefit of all invloved. Here are your options.

1. Enroll with American River College ($455), get your 17 credits and your GI Bill monies ($6000+)

2. Enroll with ARC, don't take the credits...get your GI bill monies

3. (What I am on the eve of establishing) Don't enroll in ARC ($0), get your GI Bill monies!

If this all works out, it will be sweet if you aren't concerned with getting 17 elective credits. The VA recognizes the Academy as a legitimate institution for the purposes of paying benefits...so as long as you can get your attendance verified and a Form 1999 submitted back to the VA from the Academy then you get the full benefit! I just spoke with them this week and this is the plan for some of us as of now. This is the first of it's kind to date, as everyone else has simply been paying the money to ARC and getting the bene's through them... I on the other hand want my $455 and don't need the credits...so there are your options.

It is available for those that attend.

best of luck!

And by the way, leave all of the bravado about how you are THE ONE that is GOING to graduate behind you IF you end up getting invited...you simply NEVER, EVER know... don't take ANYthing for granted. Mind your P's and Q's and keep your mouth shut. Study hard, never give up, and don't mention this site

"I am going to make it" ought to be a private mantra not a nick...just my two cents. Try something like..."professional and mature" it will get you a lot further

and...maybe not. I got pretty far in the process, but it seems as though the "way" is to simply enroll?! o'well at least I can sleep at night knowing I tried to improve the process...

and hey you can't really complain. As I calculate it we should get 7200$ I think 450$ out of pocket is worth that

When my husband went thru the process to get his GI Bill from the Academy, he talked to a woman named America at American River..She was VERY helpful and got him all the paperwork he needed and told him everything he needed to do..This was after graduation and we were already here in West LA, so they talked, wrote and emailed..Here's the VA office from the ARC website.. http://www.arc.losrios.edu/stusrvc/veterans.html has the number and email addy..Talk to America..She's awesome

BC,

Just a little additional. The acronym stands for the Montgomery GI Bill since the author and guy who pushed it was Sonny Montgomery, first a member of the House and then the Senate and who passed away this year. He was from Mississippi and the VA Medical Center in Jackson, MS is named after him. He was a tireless advocate for veterans. I met him twice when I worked for a member of the House. He was a real American hero and proudly wore his Purple Heart ribbon in his lapel. I also sat by him at a Veterans Day event at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The MGIB was the modern day version of the GI Bill that WWI and WWII veterans fought for and was passed at the end of WWII. I bought two houses and got a BA from college under that legislation. The history of the veterans who went to school on the GI bill is amazing. Lots of hollywood types for example, Dennis Franz of NYPD Blue fame is a Vietnam Vet and learned his acting skills with the assistance of the GI Bill education program.

Gentlemen,

Thank you for the info on the GI Bill!
I am not trying to put the cart before the horse, but I do look forward to collecting this benefit post CHP Academy (Hopefully class CTC-III-07).
The plan is to buy back some Army time with it...

Any idea of the percentage of Veterans in the CHP?

I know this is an old thread but thought I would re-open it with a few questions.
Wow... I'm currently going through pre-sep and there is a whole lot of info that they throw at you in a matter of days to know and understand. I'm just glad I have a "plan" as some at the briefings I've been going to do not.
Got the July class  and got a sep date for the day before the class starts. There is a draw down currently going on in my career field so I thought I would ask to get out a year early while I was going through the process for the CHP. It worked.
So here are my questions: I've read through the post and am still a bit uncertain even after I called the VA about a few things. Do I wait until I get to the Academy and then enroll or apply for MGIB? or do I start the paperwork now. I read some saying dont worry about it till the end of the Academy. I would like that last option as I'm certain there is going to be larger concerns then "wheres my money" while at the Academy. However it would be a nice little incentive.
Another thing: I keep hearing about buying military time back. How does that work? I'm not familiar.
Any other mentorship tips and advice about what to do, worry about and not to think about whilst at the Academy would be much appreciated. Very much waiting in anticipation for the class to start and it's over three months away. :hitwall:
