View Full Version : Thinking about stoping the process

Well, I have been in the process for two years now. Currently I am in backgrounds and was headed to the May class, but my BI called and said that he wanted me to come to CA April 19-21. He only gave me a week notice and when I explained that I would not be able to make there for those dates he said very rudely "Well, you are not going to be in the May class!" I then asked when the next class was and he said "I don't know sometime in the fall....September, October....I am not sure....I know it is in the fall!" I then said that I was sorry...I said sorry about twenty times. I am a little upset that he gave me only a weeks notice (I live 3000 miles away) and that he was rude about it. At least be a little understanding about where I am coming from. I mean for two years I have been waiting patiently....So, I am now at the point where I might just quit the process and try with the Troopers in my home state. Anyone else come across this rudeness?? This is not the first time that I have come across a rude officer in the hiring process. Very disappointing! :biggrin:shock:ubt:

CHP 44, I'm sorry you had a bad experience with your BI. However, I think you ought to just suck it up and avoid cutting off your nose to spite your face. It would be pretty ludicrous to trash everything because someone was rude to you. Yeah, the hiring process can be a burden, but it's well worth it in the long run. There are rude officers who are part of the CHP--but there are rude people in every line of work. If you want to quit over this, wait till you talk to a disgruntled member of the motoring public. Remember, your background investigator doesn't owe you anything for being patient--you're the one that wants the job. Hang in there and keep pressing toward the goal.

Thanks for the post! I appreciate the "come back to reality"! Thanks again!

don't give up!!! so many people would love to be in your position.
The next class after may should be Sept. 18th
Even though your BI was a little rude i just want to add that their is a very good chance that they honestly didn't know the next date. my BI didn't know the next date and i had to figure it out on my own

44... dont let this get to you. Im not sure if youre aware of this, but we (CHP) are hurting real bad for qualified people. They couldnt even fill the last class because they didnt have enough people who were ready to go, so your BI is probably under a lot of pressure to get any probable cadets ready to go. Things roll down hill, and Im sure your BI is getting pressured to get qualified people ready to go, so he/she is going to get frustrated with anything that slows the process down. They probably see you as a good candidate and dont want to hear anything from you that indicates you cant make a deadline. Take it as a compliment and stick with it bro... it will be worth it, trust me!

Well... CHP44, you must have been half-expecting to be called out to CA sometime before the May class, if you are still in backgrounds...
And the rudeness might just be another strategy employed by "The Process" to weed out those who can and can't hack it. Tough it out, bud.

all i can say is that if you truly want the job, rudeness shouldn't be what stops you. let me assure you that your not going to see a whole lot of politeness out on the road. given, a BI should be somewhat understanding, but just look at it as preparation for whats to come. friends are a luxury you won't be making when your on duty!!
if your gonna quit, feel free to tell them that i'll take your spot! as far as i'm concerned, they can spit in my face, and kick me in the groin, and i'll get through it and ask for more!!!

I was not aware that the CHP was hurting real bad for qualified people. Why is this? I just started my application process and looking forward to the process

Don't give up 44! I understand you live very far away but it sounds like your 99% in. I am sure he understands its not a simple 15 minute drive for you and if he needed you their on certain dates, sounds like he's just closing things up.
I just finshed up the final interview this past weekend and and I have my medical scheduled for friday. We may be seeing eachother at the end of may.
So where are you at in backrounds?

I was going to be finishing up and do my finial interview, but now I guess I am on the back burner for him. I have two kids that I take care of everyday (I am a stay at home dad) and my wife just started a new job and does not get any time off until the first of May and I let him know all this and he said all of that. So, I am still going back and forth right now. I need to think about my family first and their well being. So, as of right now I am not sure if I will drop out or continue. Thanks for all the support and advise!
Thanks again!

Hey CHP44, I just looked up the salary scale for the Virginia State Police... they don't pay nearly as much as the CHP. Just food for thought...

Yeah, I have too... but if you think he's rude then wait until you meet the academy staff!

Well yeah, but you have to also factor in the cost of living there vs. over here in Cali.

It is much lower than Ca....but if you live in Northern VA (around DC area) you get a 25% increase. Also, their retirement plan is much better than CA's. VA also does not go by seniority. So, that means if I want a different place in the state I would submit an application to transfer and Say if you had 20 years and I had 2 years and I submitted my application today at 9am and you submitted yours today at 9:01am I would get it. That means a lot to me. So, both departments has it pro's and con's it is just a matter of weighing them and making a decision.

i dunno... when we left virginia in 2002, prices were already going up. we still have a lot of friends in southern virginia and family in northern virginia and it seems the two areas are starting to meld in terms of cost of living.

chp44: where are you in the process? did you really not know you'd have to be flying out there at some point soon? how old are your kids? is there somewhere they can go for before/after school or daycare? do you have any friends, family, or neighbors in the area who can pitch in for a day or two? if you were to get the job, what would your wife do? you guys would have to work out something if she planned to stay there or else she'd quit and move with you... haven't you guys worked out plans, yet?
we lived in hawai'i when my husband went through the application process, so i know how hard it is to do it from afar. several times, he only had time in his work schedule to fly out on a thursday or friday, be there friday or saturday, and fly back saturday or sunday. not ideal, but you do what you have to do. the time difference works in your favor... you could take an early morning flight and still make it here in time to make it to the office that same day.

The cost of living in Northern VA is quite high, but VA State Troopers have the same thing with over time. I also, would know that I can get the area that I live in, so there would be no "Where are we going to end up after the academy!" The cost of living in Southern VA is quite less than Northern VA. I live in Northern VA and in about 5 years we are going to look to move to S. VA.

I am in backgrounds...Waiting to do the finial interview. I knew that I would be flying out to CA, but I expected a little more notice than less than 1 week. My kids are almost 3 and almost 5 months. They can not go anywhere for just one week. Most daycare places require you to sign up for a certain amount of time. I have my mother in law here, but she has a job that she needs to go to. She has her mother living with her and my father in law who has been battling a mental illness since the 80's. We did have plans...She was going to quit her job and stay here for the 6 months, but my daughter has been in therapy for the last year and needs to be here. Thanks for the advise!
