View Full Version : Speed Question
SB 405

I'm in a little bit of a heated discussion on another site (automotive not LE) about someone being cited for speed. I'll keep my question as simple as possible. Have any Officers here ever heard of a person being stopped going 45 mph (in this case 110 in a 65) over the posted speed limit and just giving the driver a warning w/o citing them?

And I assume the two of you are LE Officers? Sorry but I'm not looking for the "my neighbor is a cop and he once told me he heard about someone..." kind of thing.

I'm not really sure what type of answer you were hoping for? Surely no one here can speak to someone being let off of such a citation in the entire realm of law enforcement.

I think he specified what type of answer he was looking for.
it always cracks me up...too bad we can't have an "Opinions" Section where everyone can just let 'em fly!
ALL thrust, NO vector!
I think we, the department, need the type A, take-control, agressive personalities, but it cracks me up when I see people jumping all over stuff with no discretion.
For you candidates, I have 3+ years on and still don't know squat about 'nuthin. I have a few things I know very well, a whole bunch I don't know much about, and the rest I am still learning everytime I suit up! Best policy is usually coming up with what you think you might do, in your head, and then waiting, listening, learning. If you were correct, good for you, and if not then take what you learned and use that on your own once you're salty. You'll see... On a related note, it is interesting this site is set up just like that!!!

+1 I have about 10 years law enforcement experience in some way or another, starting when I was 14 with explorers. The only thing I know for sure is when I get to work I will put on my gear and check out my unit. I will put the key in and HOPE it starts, and stays running. Everything else is in limbo. Every call I take is different and how it is handled it never the same. That is what is nice about not working in a office job, you can handle things how you want to. If a crime has happened it will be taken care of according to the law, but usually 90% of the calls I get are trespassing and neighbor disputes, so it is up to me how I handle them.
I come into everything by giving the people I contact a chance to be respectful, and I am always respectful to them, even if they are cussing at me and screaming at me, none of that bothers me, but if I can not get anywhere talking nice to them, sometimes you have to up the ante to be heard and make them understand you are there to do a job, they do not want to listen, too bad for them, they live there, you dont, you can leave at any time, they have to deal with it. If they want to work with you fine if not, have a nice day.

I saw that on an episode of Seinfeld once. He had his hot blonde girlfriend Nikki at the time get out and ask the officer "DO YOU REALLY NEEDED TO GIVE US A TICKET?"
He just gazed into her eyes and that was it, LOL. Not even a warning.

Yes, I have taken a few to jail. No citation given and they get a warning that if they do it again, they'll go to jail again.

That's kinda how I figured it. The two guys I was chatting with live in Boston and said the Troopers give warnings many times. My response was I didn't think that would fly (110 in a 65) on the highways very often here in Cali. I told them "If you get cought 45 over the limit in California, pretty good chance your plans for the evening have just been changed"

Just curious, a 23103 VC violation?

is there leeway for the officer to cite for 23103 instead of 22348? or do you get both?

That's getting into enforcement policy issues, and we don't publicly discuss departmental policies and procedures on this board.
