At the age of about 12-13 I was visiting my cousin and grandparents in Bakersfield (I lived in Visalia) and we decided to spend the day taking the public bus around town to look at computers (we were both into computer gaming). We spent all day just going around to different computer stores and game stores looking at the stuff we wished we could have when in reality we could barely pay for our bus pass. I wish I could have fun as easily these days...
So after calling it a day we started going back, I think we had to get on 2-3 different buses to get back to my Grandma's house. The last bus stop we had to wait at was off of a main street, a median where the bus bench was, and behind that a side street that was residential. We waited for about 10 minutes when a guy comes out of his house yelling and screaming. He accused us of always being out there throwing rocks at his house and cars. He told us...and I'll never forget it "If we promise to stop he won't call the police on us" trying not to laugh or, or make him even more angrier than he seemed to be we agreed and continued to wait, joking about the crazy guy.
After roughly 30 minutes a police car pulls up, there was a Female officer driving and a Male officer in the passenger seat. She gets out and in a irritated voice says they received a report that two kids were throwing rocks at cars in this area that fit our description. I told her that I had not thrown anything at any cars and I was simply waiting for a bus to arrive so I could go home. She told me that I was lying and scolded me that I should never lie to a Police Officer. She told the male officer to hand-cuff us and I am positive I sensed apprehension from him...we had not done anything at all and they were gonna hand-cuff us? She then told me to sit on the curb. I looked at the curb which was extremely muddy and as I began to think about mentioning I'd like to sit elsewhere but at the same time she looked at me, in sort of a demanding "I know what your thinking and you're gonna sit in the mud anyway" sort of way. My cousin and I sat in the mud.
At this point I was angry but I kept calm. I again told her that I had not been doing anything wrong, she lectured my cousin and I for several minutes while we sat there and watched our bus go by, then helped us up, put us in the back of the police car and drove us to my grandparents house.
When we arrived nobody was there and she told us she was going to take us to juvenile hall until someone could pick us up. As we began to leave my grandparents house my mom pulled up and I told the officer and she stopped. The officer got out of the car talked to my mother and told her that we were extremely disrespectful, liars and had been destructing property and throwing things and moving cars. At this point I had lost any anger I had with the officers and was now scared of what my mother was gonna do to us.
We got out of the car they un-handcuffed us. By the way hand-cuffs hurt, they made me bleed. Then my mom told us to go inside and wait for her, she talked to the officer for about 5 more minutes before they left...came inside and all hell broke loose.
I endlessly swore to my mom I had done nothing, Now that I think about it it's pretty funny both my cousin and I started to cry like babies...I've only seen my mom like this one other time (and that's another story that involved, dirt, matches, gasoline, a bike, a hair-dryer and our backyard) I think my mom finally started to believe me and realized that I'd never caused any sort of trouble like this before. I believe she called and complained but nothing ever came of it.
I was pretty appaled at how the officer handled it,
