View Full Version : Cabin Air Filter
I just replaced the cabin air filter in my car for the first time in four years. FYI, if you do your own maintenance consider doing this one more than once every four years. It was pretty nasty.

Does anyone know how to change out the cabin air filter for a 1998 Toyota 4-Runner?

It filters out all the junk passing through the A/C and outside air vent system. Most times they are located under/behind the dash.

Your '91 Chev doesn't have a cabin filter.

If you turn on the A/C and get what I call that "funky wet diaper" smell throught the vents,it's time to change the filter. It's always a good idea to turn off the recycle air switch and allow outside air to blow through the sysytem for a few minutes before turning off the engine. That allows some of the moisture in the system to dry out.

To change our Odyssey's cabin filter for the first time, I actually had to saw off a piece of the dash (on the underside, behind the glovebox out of sight). No kidding, it's in the Chilton manual, and I called a dealership to confirm. They said it would have added significant cost to manufacturing to have the piece removed at the factory.

Might be best to buy two for when the parts go obsolete what with all these buyouts and bankruptcies of automakers. Usually when the original manufacture quits making it, and then some aftermarketer picks it up, the price triples.

It appears the 99 does not have one....according to the Wix Filter website.
I work on exotics, so I can not answer with 100% certainty.
