The Naval Postgraduate School - Center for Asymmetric Warfare put on a California InfraGard exercise this weekend in Pico Rivera, CA. Participating were FBI HRT, LASD SWAT, LA OES, El Rancho School District Police, and a few others. I was part of the Red Team that were the OpFor and our task was to assault the gym, take hostages, then separate and hold them in the school theater and library. As part of this, the school police, Sheriff Explorers and USMC ROTC cadets were to observe and try to remember what they saw... number of suspects, weapons, etc.
Also, a demonstration was given simulating an officer down, with a terrorist on the ground with a rocket launcher. While LASD flew in their heavy lift Air 5 helo, their smaller A-star helo with snipers flew cover and fired blanks to simulate taking out the bad guy on the ground. Air 5 then dropped off a paramedic and litter, and flew off until a mannequin was placed into the litter. Air 5 then returned to hoist up the paramedic and litter while the SWAT team protected the LZ.
The hostages were volunteers from school administration, a couple students and others from various agencies. While we held them hostage, our task was to basically to break them down and give them a sh***y time. Our only limitation was no physical contact and there were County Mental Health officials present in case a hostage had enough. Everything was monitored via close-circuit camera. The final part of the exercise was the simultaneous entries of the library and the theater by FBI HRT and LASD SWAT, respectively, using multiple entry points and blanks. I was part of the team holding hostages in the theater. I had a blast.
