Well i was just watching Fox News and they where reporting that the Army has changed their style of boot camp. They now only yell if it is necessary, get a full 8 hours of sleep, eat as much food as they want, and can call home every day!
What is up with this sissy crap nowadays?!?! They say that new recruits are of a different style that don't respond as well to the old style. They also say that the Army has been having trouble with recruits so anything they can do to keep more is a good idea. SORRY, but i hope that the CHP never lowers their standards like this. I know that they are going to kick my butt, but at least i know that the officer on the street went through the same stuff i did and that he wasn't given some sissy program
Pardon me while I throw up! This PC "kinder and gentler" crap has gotten entirely out of hand. I suppose they're going to plead with the enemy during combat to allow soldiers to get 8 hours of sleep, not interrupt their meals, and not impose unnecessary stress by shooting or taking other unkind/hostile actions???????? Maybe they'll do ballet or tap dancing instead of push-ups and running for PT, too.
I remember reading a few years back that the Army had introduced the "yellow card" in boot camp....if you felt that the DI was being unnecessarily hard on you, you could pull out the yellow card and he had to retreat and give you 5 minutes for the situation to cool down. Great military preparation, as I'm sure enemy combatants will honor the "yellow card" in wartime also.
Our own academy went through a "kinder and gentler" phase a while back when a sob sister administrator decided that it was too militant and tough. It's recovered somewhat (at least from what I've heard). Again, it creates entirely unrealistic expectations - the people on the street aren't going to all be "nice" to you, and you're not going to work 8 hours and go home every day of your career.....nor are you going to get 8 hours of sleep every night (or day). Extended shift due to late calls, being in court all day after graveyard shift and then working again that night, finishing reports prior to days off.....there are all kinds of things that keep you from normalcy.

My buddy went through USAF BT, and he said that the class after his was the beginning of "softer" methods. I.e.- no unnecessary yelling from the cadre, a 5 minute break after every 20 minutes of PT, et cetera.

Ultimately America will get the type of cop and soldier it deserves. Shortly after that we will be living under the rule of a stronger country that doesn't cater to the "yellow card" "kinder and gentler" crowd. Sometimes I think I'll actually welcome it.

I think a lot of this stuff is urban legend of one form or another. Mac I believe what you're talking about was the stress cards that the Navy supposedly implemented. This in fact turned out to be false as you can see here : http://www.snopes.com/military/stress.htm

I've been processing with a recruiter w/the army, and he told me that no matter how much preparation I do prior to basic, it would still kick me in the ass physically and mentally. He did say most of the yelling is in the first two weeks, and that after that there's less of it, but mostly because the recruits know what is expected from them from that point on, so it isn't as necessary.

Thanks....I never bothered to check Snopes on that one, but glad to hear that it was at least mostly false. I hope the rumors about the "new" Army boot camp regime are false too. Our society is progressively being "dumbed down" and sissified by the bleeding (or is it "bleating"?) heart, politically correct sob sister pansies. Make everything as safe, sterile and easy as possible so nobody gets hurt or offended and nobody has to expend any more effort than absolutely necessary to do anything.
Retchp - wise words....and unfortunately, all too true. The warrior mentality is a dying thing here, but not necessarily elsewhere.

i just can't believe the calling home every day part... are they allowing them to take cell phones in? my husband went through boot camp not all that long ago and he got one phone call, towards the end. he frantically called everyone in his immediate family, couldn't get a hold of anyone, and ended up talking to his uncle who never has much to say, haha.

BRRRINGG< BRRRRRING< "Excuse me Mr. Drill Sergeant, could you stop yelling for a minute, I have an important call on my cell phone, be wit ya in a sec"
COME ON!!! I saw the clip on FOX and heard it on several radio shows as well. They actually had Army officers praising the program. How sad. I guess in the next war the army is going to send in those specialized units that "KNOW how to talk to people", the hugs & kisses Brigade. What next? Does everyone get tea time at 11 and a nap.
Hell ..... Go ARMY!!!

"Verbal Judo" (aka "Gerbil Voodoo" ) instead of PT. If you can talk your way out of a battle, why would you need to be in shape to fight one?
