How do you get your dog to take pills?

Two ways - two dogs!
First one, a Boxer! I trick him! I get the pill out and put it in my hand, then I call him into the room and act like I am getting a treat out of the treat bag. He knows what the bag looks like, so he assumes I am getting a "cookie" for him. I give him the pill like it's the treat and he gobbles it right down.
Second one, a Chi-Doxie my husband affectionately calls a rat dog. She knows better, so I have to pry her mouth open, throw the treat at the back of her mouth, then clamp her mouth shut and blow on her nose. I also rub her throat in a downward direction to help.
I have heard the whole, "put them in a treat or some cheese" thing, but that has never worked for us. Hope this helps!

Now that's commitment. Mixing it in with the dog food always works for my mutt. I have heard that some dogs are smart enough to work around this method though LOL. Albeit, just another reason I like big dumb dogs.

For my Lab I tried the cheese or hotdog and she just eats the good stuff and spits out the pill. So I now just do the easy way and pop the pill in the back of her throat, hold her mouth shut and a stroke or two of her throat and it's down. It's much easier than it sounds.

Roll the pill up in a piece of lunch meat. Most dogs will inhale the meat sooo fast they never knew the pill was inside.

Peanut butter. Plus it's funny watching a dog smack their chops for a couple of minutes. My dog loves it.

My Cane Corso named Richie loved the rolled meat with a pill in the middle. Any other way was a disaster waiting to happen.

Any type of lunch meat (salami is a good one for our lab), cheese, soft dog treats....anything that your dog REALLY loves and will inhale without chewing. If neither of those work, shoving it down is always a winner.
Peanut Butter...down it goes!

I was taking care of a friend's border collie and she needed to take some pills. A friend of my mom said she takes a piece of bread and tears a small piece off, puts the pill on it and then squeezes the bread into a small ball and then gives it to the dog.
I tried it and it worked. You've got to use a small enough piece of bread so that the dog will just gulp it down and not chew it.
Another person I know said she tried to give pills to her dog in food, but the dog would just roll the food around in its mouth, spit the pill out and then eat the food.

My wife works for a vet's office, I've seen her give our dog pills. This is what she does, it's quite entertaining :
1. She pulls out a pill (dog not in the room) leaves it on the counter
2. Calls the dog in
3. Has him sit, pets him while standing behind him (dog unaware of his impending doom)
4. Quietly grabs the pill
5. Quickly opens the dogs mouth, throws the damn thing to the back of his throat
6. Shuts his mouth and holds it closed
7. Blows in his nose or flicks him lightly on the nose (causes an involuntary "swallow" reflex)
8. Than while still holding mouth closed rubs his neck.
9. Lets go of dog... dog looks dazed with a WTF look on his face.
She has also used a "Pet Piller" (http://www.petrx.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=719) she got from work..... and also like everyone else has stated the old "hide it in some food" trick always works, try cheese.

I have a 5 year old Boxer and the way I do it is with Vienna Sausages. I buy the 18 can pack at Costco and give him a couple cans every month or so. Its easy to just push the pill into the middle of it. He had dental surgery a couple months back and had to take pills 3 times daily. Sometimes I would cover the sausage with cottage cheese because the pills were supposed to be very bitter.

As mentioned above, Pill Pockets are great.
