I was just wondering when benefits kick in once you are in the academy? I have heard that the day you enter you get benefits, but I have also heard that it takes a month...I have two kids and I would hate to go a month without benefits...It would make more since for my wife to work for that month then go without benefits. Anyone have any ideas??
Thanks

The Academy recruiting brochure states that you are paid, once a month, for every month you are at the Academy.
The brochure also states that benefits do not begin until after you've been at the Academy for 30 days.

i want to say they kick in before the thirty days, but i could be wrong... i remember doing the math and figuring between purchasing private insurance or hoping for the best with cobra (we were within the limits of when a payment would be due for cobra, so if anything had happened, we could have paid out of pocket, then sent in our cobra payment, and been reimbursed). i think i remember being gald we didn't purchase private insurance because the chp stuff kicked in sooner than we'd expected... i'll have to ask my husband again. my memory sucks.

Our benefits kicked in at the first of the month after starting the Academy.
We started on August 22nd, so our benefits kicked in September 1st.

yep, you're right... that's exactly what it was. so it COULD be 30 days, if you start on the first of the month... but it will likely be less.

Thanks so much for the posts! It has set my mind at ease...I am looking at the May 29th class and was a little nervous about not having benefits!
Thanks again!

The current class CTC I-06 began on March 6, and their benefits began on April 1. Since the next class is starting so close to the end of the month on May 29, they may start benefits at the earliest on June 1 or in the worst case scenario on July 1.
You might also want to read my post from today on the "Applicant Family Forum" section. I posted information about financial considerations and medical/dental/vision benefits.
Good luck in the application process!
