It's already happening. The CHPERS folks (in their nondescript office around the corner from the Academy) have that project well under way.

They're replacing and upgrading alot of the hardware on just about every mountaintop. As soon as the Feds let loose of the 700/800 MHz radio band (related directly to your TV channels "going digital"), we'll get ownership of a pretty sizeable block, to which those new extenders will be tuned. A third-party vendor is developing a new repeater system, using those new extenders, which will be incorporated into our new bleeding-edge patrol vehicle system- currently under development, but I'll have more on that later in a more secure thread (and no, it's not a Visteon). Multiple radios, allowing for joint communications with Allied agencies will be incorporated into those new vehicles. Oh, and I believe the Rapid Response Vehicles (RRV, WolfCoach, Tahoe-on-Sterroids) were paid for out of that same project.

So yeah, its all being done, but most of it will be invisible until we get those new patrol cars.

Thank you for the very detailed response. That was better than I had hoped for :surprised: Glad to hear the department is getting a much needed upgrade with their radios.

Yeah- what a fine beast that was. There are still a few poking around- the old Windows 2000 ones. The RRV's and the PAO's Chargers also have the newer Windows XP Visteon systems as well, but the regular black-n-whites were scrapped by Fleet Ops over a year ago, with prejudice, it seemed.

All you people with old Visteons in your Areas- RUN THEM OUT!!

Thanks Vinnie for the information. I figured that it was a test and not all units would have them.
