As some of you may know, our contract with the State expires at the end of June. There are high level negotiations occurring over our new contract. One of the things that it looks like may go through is a re-thinking of the "benefits" that cadets receive during their Academy training. Currently, cadets receive free room, board, and uniforms during their Academy stay. The State feels that this arrangement is an unfair benefit and may be a violation of State law. What has been tentatively agreed to is that beginning with the next class, cadets will now have the cost of room, food, and uniforms deducted from their pay. The exact amount has not been agreed upon, but is expected to be between $50 and $75 dollars a day. This will seriously decrease the amount of money that cadets earn while there, but the State has shown that even with the pay deductions, the CHP Academy still offers more than other agency academies within the state.

We cant fill the Academy fast enough now and if this is true, expect it to get even more difficult.

Obviously this an April Fools joke. Bad Horatio! No Doughnut for you!
To do something like this in today's recruiting climate would be the height of ignorance by the Department. Other agencies are paying signing bonuses for cryin' out loud! Oh...I forgot Ahnold is the Governator now...maybe it is true. NOT!

What a sick joke. If that was true then I'd just go to LAPD where they pay cadets full officer salary day one of their academy.

Ya, I guess it was pretty transparent. I was just making an April Fool's joke. No plans are in the works to make cadets pay for their Academy stay...As far as I know....

Is there any "MERIT PAY" or "INCENTIVE" for submitting cost savings ideas???? If there is, Horatio could probably get a GIANT BONUS for that idea...

Maybe even a promotion to Sacto???;)

Actually I had a discussion about that article with a few LAPD officers last week during my ride-along. And I don't think LAPD is second best at all, just different (in a positive way).

I'd agree SuperTrooper. LAPD is a good bunch of people overall, but they have some big internal problems. Still, I think they are a good organization...

One of the Officers being sued is "Now working in Santa Maria". Haven't found out who yet, but we sure get a lot of "Former" LAPD people moving here to work. All in all, they are good Officers too.

If they start charging for room and board then they won't be able to mandate cadets stay at the Academy. I can already see the law suits brewing . . . If it's true, our Academy will no longer be a live-in Academy. You can't force someone to live there and then charge them. However, it is all tax deductible if they do. A USNPS ranger showed me how to take my state house rent right off the top of my gross income when I was in DV. It was so easy and can be done with the short form. It comes off your gross even if you don't itemize. Very coo.. However, it will mean married folks will be maintaining two residences. If all this is true . . .
