does being a martial artist give you any extra points during the whole hiring process?

Absolutely none. Sorry. In fact, my roommate when I was a cadet just got out of the Marine Corps and he was a wazoo martial artist in several disciplines (confirmed). He did kick butt during the boxing event in PT; that was the only advantage he had. I was shocked to learn, about a month and a half after graduation, he was fired on breakin for being too aggressive. I'd say his combat mindset was a hinderance in his case. I would also caution you about discussing it during your Academy training. The Advanced Officer Training staff are expert ground fighters and that's all they do all day long. Their sergeant often helps with PT as he was a PT instructor as an officer. Many former cadets will remember him as Red Man.
