Can anyone help me with what age this game would be OK for? The ratings are so general it's hard to tell. Middle School? High School?
I figured someone on here would know.
Thanks

Well, the game says M for Mature, so my husband says 17. The description for the rating is "Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Strong Language". My husband says it is very realistic, and he would not recommend it for anyone younger than that. Hope that helps.
You can turn off the gory part.....

If I remember correctly you can also turn the strong language off. My husband said he wouldn't let ours play it until they are at least 15.

The box says Rated "M" - MATURE; 17+ years of age
Blood and Gore
Intense Violence
Strong Language
I don't personally think an undeveloped mind has the capacity to venture into the game without suffering, however minimal, some anxiety and false beliefs that death is not permanent. After all, you just restart the game and all is fine.

My god its a game. You talk to your kids, tell them it's all fake and computer generated, make sure they understand, turn of the gore and the language and let them play. Then be a parent and monitor their playing time. No biggie. Did we not grow up, playing cops and robbers, cheing on lead toys and walking to and from school.

I'm confused. My kid gave me that game for Christmas. Can I play it? Do I have to be mature?
Lots of shooting and killing. If a kid is old enough to know it is a game, I would say okay. It is a war setting and not a street scene so that might help the confusion with reality bit.

My hubby has the new Call of Duty (World at War). It is much more graphic and has A LOT more of the language than the previous version. We're not angels by any means, but sometimes the amount of language I hear makes me have to walk away....I guess it all depends on what you feel is appropriate for your kids and their maturity level. Also, if you let your kids join the online community, beware that many of the players use headsets during play, and their language is much worse than that of the game.

He won't be playing online for sure. I have heard you can turn off or turn down the violence and language - does anybody know how much it really cuts it out???
He does not play a lot and it is hooked up in the family room so is always supervised. he has been shooting guns at a Boy Scout range since he was 5 and teaches 1st Aid for his troop (no, nothing certified just Boy Scout stuff) so I really think he understands the whole guns, violence and consequences part. I am only even considering his request because it is soldiers not street thugs and I heard it can be toned down.
So far I am as undecided as I was before I posted.

+1 for Boy Scouts and all he will learn!!!
I returned my COD-World at War so I can't check on toning down the violence, but strongly think that COD-4 was way better and looking forward to COD-6 possibly being released at the end of the year, plus it will be back to the COD-4 style

I love violent video games! Anybody that doesn't can go blow themselves up. Furthermore, I don't think they impact me at all. I grew up playing them, and everytime someone told me they had a negative impact on me, I punched them in the eye. Except for one guy, whom I stabbed in the throat with a pen. But he deserved it, because he was a wuss. If I can't solve a problem with my intellect, I put my fist in it--that's what Mike Tyson's Punch Out taught me. And if I don't like someone coming at me, I jump on their head (thanks to Super Mario Bros.). Don't ask what Tetris taught me. Anyway, I think all kids should play violent video games, because it helps make them mature adults while improving their hand-eye coordination (very helpful when it comes to killing). I need to go kick my neighbor's cat.

If I remember correctly (I took the game back once my husband was finished....I wanted the store credit to get myself a used Halo 3 game)if you turn down the language it just takes that "word" out of the dialogue so you don't hear it, but you can pretty much guess which word is supposed to go there.
With the violence turned down you don't always see blood splattering everywhere, and you don't see body limbs being blown around everywhere...the people just drop down dead when you kill them.

I think the game is fun but not for a young group of kids. It also depends on the way you are bringing your kids up.

+1. Also, it depends on the child. Some kids are able to separate real violence from virtual violence really well, while others aren't.
I would say it's a pretty violent game to try out if all your son's ever played is Mario Kart, then all of a sudden you let him play COD.

I play both of the CODs. When i played the 1 player mode, i would play on the weekends for maybe an hour or so. When i found out you can play them online, I spent too much time online with those games. I had to set a timmer to remind me not to over do it. If your kids are teens, they hear everything bad from the game at school or when they hang out with their peers. If they are younger, let them play Mario cart or something more age appropriate. You see, these games are designed (online versions) to advance the players rank through levels. The more one plays, the more you level up and gain "perks". They are very addictive. This often leads to kids (and adults) neglecting other more important things in life. So, set a timmer and good luck. Stay safe.
