...and i mean looooooooooove to fish, like if there were one thing other than working the road they would rather do, it would be to fish?

And if so, how does being a CHP officer affect, positively or negatively, you feeding your appetite to hear your drag screaming?

I'm in Humboldt and I'll tell you there is nothing sweeter than the sound of a Penn screaming. Off-shore is my game.

Worked in LA my entire time but made trips to the eastern sierras, mostly the Mammoth area, to fish every summer and fall. My wife and I have lifetime CA licenses. A little expensive to get but in the long run well worth the money.

You guys should check out "Secrets of Sierra Fishing" by Jack Holder. It's a fishing guide for the Sierras complete with contact information and satellite maps. You can find it at www.yosemiteangler.com (http://www.yosemiteangler.com/).

Shameless plug for a friend: For any of you who are avid fisherman and have ever wanted a custom, one-of-a-kind, hand-built rod, a buddy of mine is a medically retired Chippie (and my former graveyard partner) who now builds/wraps custom fishing rods. He does both fresh and saltwater rods and his work is absolute A-1, top o' the line stuff. I've seen many of the rods he's built first-hand, and the attention to detail is unbelievable. Check out his gallery here:

The top two pics are of a rod he built and donated to the Officer Jim Goodman Memorial Golf Tournament. He has donated several other rods for similar causes. Definitely worth a look if you like "the finer things."

I'd love to hear some good fishing stories here, though. Biggest catch, etc...

The picture on the cover of the book tells it all. From my favorite lake where I caught my biggest trout....Lake George in Mammoth Lakes.

Hey Jared. I love to fish, but I would rather hunt if I could. This job actually works great for the outdoor hobbies, ie. hunting and fishing. I work the swing shift hours most of the time so that I can go fishing in the morning. If you work nights, then you can either fish right after work or after you wake up in the afternoon. Of course you can't do this if you are on a 12hr shift. This schedule works better for the 8hr day. Take care and good luck. Fish On!

Aren't just about all road officers on the 12 hour now?

There is a small handful that are still 8's.

This thread contains the list:

Auburn is still on the 8's. 79% of our office wants 12's, but we need 80%. Oh well, at least I can get some things done in the morning. I'll go fishing now.

Wow, I haven't check on this thread in a while. I thought it was dead since it took so long for people to respond to it. It's nice to see how many have now, though. I'm glad to hear that the profession caters to the outdoorsman.

I could imagine it being difficult finding some time in a day to fish if you just worked 12 hours, but there has got to be plenty of catch-up time in the next 3/4 days off, right?

That's awesome. I know they're free diving, but I'm finishing up my PADI certification next weekend. I'm pretty excited to add spear fishing to the rest of my fishing experience arsenal. Fish, lobsters, pismo clams; I can't wait.
