View Full Version : CHP Dodge Magnums?

Can you imagine how Dodge would tout a contract providing our patrol cars? I can imagine the cheesy commercials they might come out with... say Eric Estrada getting pulled over for speeding, checking out the car in the rear-view mirror, and making some comment to the camera? The possibilities, while hilarious to imagine, make me cringe the way Chips 99 did.
I'll drive a Dodge if they give me one, but I'll never spend my own money on one again until they can figure out how to build a decent transmission.
Hi all,
Is the CHP testing Magnums on the highways? A coworker said he saw a CHP Magnum make a traffic stop on the 210 freeway the other day. I wish he was able to take a picture. I'd love to see one. Thanks!
When I was at officer forum in August, the commish's told us they had bought 8 of them. They didn't say when they would be out, but I imagine it's possible. I haven't heard if they have any out for sure. Our ASM said we were going to be a test area. That was several months ago.

i also heard that they failed testing, though only one source told me this so it is not for sure

The Magnum is a station wagon. Is the patrol really looking at these?
My bad, they said they were buying 8 Chargers. I should have read closer above. There was also another thread started somewhere else saying the EVOC staff was not impressed with the Durango police/pursuit rated version. They told me just the opposite, they were very impressed. It was less than 2 seconds slower than the z28's they bought in 2000 on the high speed track. Maybe they've changed their minds since.
It will be a while before I drive either.

Where exactly on the 210?
I should ask him if he was sure it was a Magnum and not a Charger. I just found this: http://www.jalopnik.com/cars/news/chips-unveil-charger-in-san-francisco-139983.php

Hey Q...That pic looks like the real deal. However I don't see the patrol going with that type of wheel. IMO if the Charger ever does come to be I think we will see wheels more like these on patrol units.

How about the 1969 Polara??? (440 Magnum!!!)
Does the CHP have foot patrol or bicycles???
We do have bicycles and foot patrol in certain areas, Bay Area around 3 Com park and the Capitol probably other places too but I really don't pay attention
I did see a Dodge Durango on a stop today near Fresno.

Reminds me of the "Interceptor" from The Road Warrior. But that does look like the kind of wheel set we'd have. That's sort of what we have now. Those small center caps allow the brakes to cool better. I doubt we'll see the large dinner plates again. Frankly, I'm happy about that. Those things looked cheesy from the get-go.

The alloys on the Charger looked good. But your right Mentor, the black one's with the center cap are much more functional. Probably half the cost of the alloys to replace. I know I've had a few wheels replaced.

I haven't confirmed this through EVOC myself, but I have heard from more than one source that they were blowin' trannies... :shock:ops: ...OK, poor word selection. I mean, they were "breaking transmissions" at a pretty frequent rate. Until it is confirmed through someone in EVOC, I guess it's still a myth, although Dodge is well-known for transmission problems.

I'm pretty sure Dodge would work on all the bugs if it means getting the contract. BTW nice job Q that's exactly how I see the new car looking.

The funny thing is that the guys in the field, including myself, will drive whatever they give us. What choice do we have? Dodge, Chevy, Ford; who cares? It's an 8 hour office and that's it. The Charger is aggressive looking and that'd be fun only if it's functional. But I'd be just as happy with my Crown Vic if it were given an engine augmentation (say to 325+ hp). Most of us are partial to certain makes but we really don't have a choice in the field what we go 10-8 in. There are only a handful (literally) of people who decide what make and model goes into a contract. And a person with purchasing power can even over-ride the recommendations of the EVOC staff. The ultimate decision resides with the commissioner. If he wants a Dodge, that's what we'll get. But don't EVER forget the underlying politics involved in large monetary contracts. Everyone, including the commissioner, has much at stake. So far, no one's been tagged for kick backs, but who do you think pays for lunch when the Ford, Dodge, or GMC representative has lunch with a chief or commissioner? I'd bet a million bucks it isn't the state of California!

As with all state equipment, we will get the best that the least amount of money can buy.

BTW^^ That car was over the yellow line, as the king of Thailands daughter was on the island I was on (Koh Samui) and this was part of the motorcade. We had to stop, and as you can see past the driveside we could not be by our motorbikes when they drove by.

My dad was just up at the acadamy, and he told me that the CHP was testing the Dodge Charger but disqualified it because the poor visability through the rear window. That is just what someone at the acadamy told him.

I have a 1999 Dodge 2500 4x4 with the Cummins engine and a six speed manual transmission. Over 110k and still going strong with only one problem. (Lift pump / injector pump went bad at 99k - Covered under warranty).
I won't speak for their cars but the trucks with the Cummins engine are really well built.
