Good riddance. From what I read in the news article this woman was a definite hairball. If packing a .45 is not a precursor to using violence as a means to an end, I don't know what is.
I am just grateful the officers all survived and that the taxpayers will not be burdened with defending another turd.

I was listening to the radio this morning (KCBS 740) and they said "The suspect tried to ram the CHP cruiser and that's when the officer opened fire with his service revolver". Yes, they actually said service revolver!

How long has it been since you guys replaced your "service revolvers?"

How about the bullet "Revolves" when it exits the barrel???

I thing we went to the .40 about 11 years ago, maybe 12...Rumor has it (its always rumor till you have it in you hot lil' hands) that we get a new S/W .40 here in the near future. The life of the ones we currently carry are past their prime.

We transitioned to the .40 semi-autos in 1990-91.

Mac, is correct on when we changed to the .40 cals. At the last area rep. meeting the commissioner said, I heard it, that the new tactical .40 cals would be out to the field offices in 18 months. We are due for an upgrade. I've heard good things about the new .40's.

I don't understand why is the CHP going with the 4006TSW. I've heard it's already out of production so why go with a discontinued model? Why not go with SiG P226R/P229R or GLOCK 22/23 .40S&W? A fullsize USP .40 sounds nice...

A myriad of reasons. Pricing war might have had something to do with it. Or maybe a CA legislator is being taken care of by S&W, as long as said legislator ensures that the CHP carries S&W firearms. Think about it, this is a pretty huge contract. 7,000+ weapons at a few hundred bucks a pop... a very large contract for Smith and Wesson.
I'm curious, what make/model of revolver was the standard issue before the 4006 was issued? Was it also S&W?

i hear from other officers that the s&w 4006tsw we are getting is already a discontinued model. are we the dumping ground for s&w?

if you ever shot their 38 revolver, any semi auto is better than that. Is it the best, no, but I like the AR I have in my car.

The way it was explained by the commissioner is that by going with the 4006TSW we will not have to do a study of other available weapons available. The 4006TSW is basically the same weapon, so we could just transition into it without a study which would add another 2 years to the process.
As long as they are new weapons it will be a plus from the ones we have. The current .40 cal is a pretty good weapon, but they are just old now. But look at the bright side. We are getting new belts with a BRASS buckle. Whoopie!!! Upper management seems to think that going back to the brass buckle is great. How about a radio system that works?

FYI, the 4006TSW is NOT out of production. It is currently in production. Some people are getting confused here. The 4006 is no longer being produced. There's a difference between those two models. The whole point is that our current weapon, the 4006 is no longer produced and we're replacing it with the 4006TSW which is. A couple of folks on this thread are getting things a bit mixed up which provides disinformation. Just to reiterate, we are replacing the discontinued model 4006 with the current production model of the 4006TSW. Also, I was issued my 4006 in early 1990 when I went through the instructor training preceding the change out from revolvers to automatics. It has seen its day and I'm only about half-way through my career. I carried a model 1911A1 in the service. Regardless, I'd go back to carrying my GP100 6" any day. It shot better than any automatic I've ever owned and I've owned quite a few.

Hey Officers: What design modifications make the old 4006 different from the 4006TSW?
And Mentor: The GP100 is a great weapon... I like how well-balanced it is.

I'm sorry sir, but S&W's TSW line of semi-autos has been put out of production except for the 3913TSW & 4013TSW. I emailed S&W a while ago and they told me so. Also check out here: http://www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?catalogId=11101&storeId=10001&categoryId=15708&langId=-1&parent_category_rn=15701&top_category=15701 They don't even list it anymore.
If ya don't believe me, email S&W yourself and ask them.

The cheaper one has a fixed rear sight. I believe that's the one we're getting.
If I remember correctly, there are more plastic parts on the tsw's then on our older chp specials.

They are listed "privately". You would have to select the exact model from the pull down menu in order to get to that page. They don't list it on the "Firearms>Pistols" section.
I copied this from my email. I emailed S&W a while back and this is what they told me:

Hello Smith & Wesson Customer Support,
I was just wondering if your line of Tactical Series
Pistol are still in production?
Thank you very much.
They responded with this answer:
Sir, only the 3913TSW and the 4013TSW are still in production.

Rodeo, you got the drop pouches too? One guy in Central had them, I asked him what it was and he said it was a hand-me-down from his father. His pops is retired.

Nope....I've got the quad loader pouch with the speedloaders that release when they hit the ejection rod (forget the brand). The drop pouches with the speed strips were a bit before my time.

Just rollin' back-up for NorCal... After reading this thread, I sent an e-mail to S&W myself, just to confirm. They also told me the 4006TSW is done... So, let's see - that makes radio heads, lightbars, and duty weapons obsolete... Am I missing anything else:confused::

Good evening,
Is the 4006TSW still in active production or is it being phased out and, if so,
what is the time frame?
Thank you,

If I'm in error I stand corrected. But explain how they're going to retrofit an force of over 6500 uniformed members with the 4006TSW? We haven't taken full delivery on them yet. Will we be depleting their remaining stock? Just curious.
And we've always been years behind other agencies when it comes to technology and equipment. Our only strength has been our scope of training. Training is where we surpass every other agency.
I wouldn't mind holding on to my current weapon to get a modern weapon. I know some people poo-poo the polymer framed weapons, I WAS one of them. But I have been impressed with most of them I have shot. Some people don't like the Glock they call it plastic or cheap. Some don't like the lack of a positive safety. I know the department thinks it has to choose weapon that will work for everyone, but like always, they don't consult the wants, needs or desires of the people who have to use them.
I hope they keep the tactical light rails on there. I won't hold my breath.

That's a good question... I don't know the answer. I've also heard we will have a buy-back option of our current one - at a "goooood" rate... Could the two issues be related? We clean out their warehouse of old stuff they no longer want and we get a "pat on the back" with reference to the one's we currently have? Plus, I'm surprised a company would keep an item they've discontinued in stock in such a large quantity. It doesn't make sense. And that 6,500+ doesn't count new hires, etc. I doubt our atrition rate is that high, is it? If someone has the answer to the riddle, please share...
I also emailed Smith & Wesson and got the following reply:
Hi,
Sorry no it is not. Most of the TSW is now discontinued
Thanks
