First, I would like to say hello as this is my first post on this website. My question is this. I live in the Bay area and was wondering what are the chances of getting placed somewhere in the Bay area as my initial assignment? I am starting the beginning stages of the hiring process and was just curious if there was anyone who had just graduated or any Bay area officers who might know. Thank you in advance.

I graduated last August. From my class 3 went to San Fran, 8 went to San Jose, 2 to Oakland, Redwood City took a few. The Class before mine sent almost the same numbers to the same areas. I would say that you have a good chance, but there are no guarantee's.
It's very rare that the Bay Area DOESN'T take at least a few trainees out of an Academy class, so your chances are pretty good. But as Desert Rat said, there are no guarantees.

if you don't get NoCal, then you can transfer there in a year or so. If you are not ready to relocate to SoCal, maybe look somewhere else.

If the last 4 digits of your Social Security number are high, then you have a much better chance of getting an office you want to work at out of the Academy. The best 4 digits you could have would be 9999, while the worst would be 0000. Once the openings are offered to cadets, you put your choices on a list (there are a few other things that figure into your placement like owing a house, having kids in school, etc...). But, if your number is high, you'll generally get one of your top choices. In this case, the Bay Area. We need good people... don't let this discourage you. You are able to transfer after a year (give or take).
My two cents: Go to the Bay or LA Area out of the Academy.

Thank you to all who replied. Unfortunately, my SSN is a low number. The reason I posted this question is my wife is from the bay area and is not really inclined to move since she is set in her career. I am at the upper end of the hiring age and this is basically my last chance to test. I will take to heart the conditions put forth from the responses and pray for the best. Best of luck and thanks again.
Stump,
GO FOR IT! You won't regret it! If, by chance, you get down south it would only be for a year (as previously stated) If this is what you want a year (maybe) is no big deal!

Roughly 50% of the new officers have been going to the Bay Area. About 50% to the LA area. A handful to the desert. More often than not, the "bottom of the bunch" have been coming to the Bay Area. Nothing is definite on the Highway Patrol, but you have a reasonable chance. Don't happen to own a home or have school-aged children, do you?

For those in the know.....a question
If we do own our home and have school aged children is it a lock to be put on the top come selection time? (academy graduation)
Having been in the military and a current LEO, I completely understand the "needs of the department" always come first, but it would be nice to not have to worry about renting the house, moving, etc.....
I'm here in the Central Valley so my wife and I pretty much have already accepted the fact that we will be going somewhere for at least a year or two.....or more.
I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess the Hanford Office is out of question;)

My SSN is in the 3000 range and I don't have a home, kids, etc. I got my first choice - an office in the Bay Area. On the flip side, we had at least 2 out of our class that wanted the LA area and got the bay area. Go figure. You never really know, but your chances are pretty good.

My SSN is isn the low 3000 as well and I got my 14th choice-Santa Fe Springs. Wanted the Bay Area but did not happen. Just pick your top to bottom and hope for the best. Like schutzpolizei said, "You never really know, but your chances are pretty good." Or in my case, "pretty bad".

Thanks once again to those who posted. My SSN falls in the 3000 range as well. Sounds as if it is luck of the draw and where the need is greatest. By the way, where is Santa Fe Springs 14596?

If you own your home or/and have kids in school you will be on the top of the list. Not sure where you live exactly but the bay area would be a definite for you.

Redwood City is a major training office with cadets going in all the time - there is a good chance you could get it. Also Hayward and San Jose tend to get quite a few. SF and Oakland comes and goes.

Thanks for the responses....it's appreciated
I'm pretty cool with wherever they would send me, but obviously it would be nice not to move.
Also, this bridge can/will be crossed once I get there, but curiosity is killing this cat.

Hi all, I was hoping you could help me with a question I have had?
I am going to be going threw the testing soon, then I will be going into the academy. I would prefer to go to the station in Plumas county. I dont think it is a highly sought after station as it is so far away from anywhere  but my wifes family lives there and I would love to still be near the city. (only a 3 hour drive) lol
What do you think the odds are.

It's all about seniority, and it's a senior office. Not good odds at all.

Same answer as in the other thread.

reading these posts is making me chuckle....I just received my son's SS card; his last four in the high 9800s, while mine is in the low 1000s.... Never thought I'd be jealous over anything a three week old has!
FYI the owning a home and having school aged children is not a for sure thing. When I graduated I owned a home and had 4 school aged children. I missed the nearest office on the list by 4 miles according to Mapquest, which is what they used to determine the milage. There was no mercy. I lived in Modesto at the time. We now live in So.Cal. Got assigned to Central.
Good Luck

You know, I spent a little time thinking about initial assignment. . .the last four of my SSN are 0494  , but then realized, after only one year ( which will fly by ) it won't really matter.
