Took a few pics of my 1993 CHP Mustang today and thought I would post them up. Its a 1993 and served out of the Santa Cruz Office of the CHP from 1993-1998. It is NEVER driven on the street and is taken to car shows on a trailer. You can see the whole project here www.fotki.com/sparksvt (http://www.fotki.com/sparksvt)

I was told by the Officer who drove the car he had a Radar unit in the car. Anyone know what unit would have been in the car back then? Would it have had a front and rear window Radar antenna mounted or just front?

Sorry I can't help you with the radar question, "Sparky," but I just wanted to take a second and say good job. That Mustang came out great and it looks like it was truly a labor of love.

Also took a look at the other pictures on your site. Thanks for sharing them.

Very nice restoration job - post some pics of the interior also when you get a chance!

I don't remember what we were using in '93, but we definitely had the Stalker radar units by '98. I can't remember a unit that ever didn't have both front and rear antennae installed.

Hey Chris,

Nice pics - your car looks great! When the weather gets better I hope to catch up with you at a local show to get a better look.

I remember as a punkie teen seeing one of these launch up a onramp one night. Freaked me out. We have the new Chargers. I am a reserve PO and cant drive the Chargers yet. Have to put miles on the old Crown Vics. Going code, I cant keep up with the Chargers. Their animals. As for these mustangs, Always wondered how it launched. Never owned one. Sweet restoration!!!

I worked Santa Cruz from 96-99. Im sure I probaly drove this car as I drove every one there. I dont remember any of them being affixed with radar units. Fond memories:biggrin:good times:wink:

Do you remember if the Mustangs in Santa Cruz had red driver's side spotlights? I know the car had a red steady burning red light mounted inside the car near the rear view mirror. I was told some of the cars had the red spot and some did not. Also, I sent you a PM.

Thanks
Chris

They did have steady red spots. Both those Officer's listed in your PM were both there. We had at least 2 mustang's while I was there and might have even had 3. I will call my buddy in my office who worked there with me, he will remember better than I do.

Talked with my buddy today, he remembers there being 3 mustangs also. 2 of them being assigned to the Officers in your PM. The restoration looks great. That 5 speed sure was fun to drive, if you could remember to put the parking brake on:noidea::doubt:

would have been a golden eagle with both front and rear mounted antennas....probably find a unit on ebay

Thanks for your input. THis is the first time I heard the Golden Eagle would have been period correct and possibly used in my car. What makes you think it would be the Golden Eagle? I have heard several differnet suggestions including a Kustom Signals " Trooper" Kustam "HAWK", Kustom KR10, and some others. I want this restoration to be right so this is important to me. I have a pic of a CHP Mustang interior with a Kustom "Trooper" in it. THis unit also has a VASCAR system built in but the CHP Mustangs do not have the proper VASCAR speedo cable from ford in them to hook it up as VASCAR and Radar. Here is the pic im refering to. Let me know what you think.

Checking again with the same buddy about the radar units. He says they would have been an mph-k or kustom eagle.

Seeing that pic jogged my memory (at least a little bit) - we did have Kustoms before the Stalkers. After poking around on the 'net, the one I definitely remember using was the Trooper. The Hawk (at least in the pics I saw on the 'net) had the thumbwheel "comic book alarm" which could be set by the user to sound an audible alert at a certain target speed. That feature was not allowed by the CHP. The KR-10 doesn't look familiar either.

As far as VASCAR, I can tell you with 100% certainty that no CHP Mustang was ever equipped with VASCAR.

kustom manufactured the "golden eagle" specifically for the chp. it was a small compact unit that had all the electronics mounted in the trunk and only the counting unit and antenna's mounted in the vehicle to conserve space, similar to the stalker units in use today. i dont have any pics of the eagle but the one in the picture above is a kustom hawk. these were phased out in the early 90's and when i came on in 95 my office only had 1 of these. hope this helps.

Based on the "How VASCAR works" article I just read, it sounds like it would be illegal in CA, as it clocks the vehicle. Is that true? That would certainly make sense, based on your certainty that it's never been used by the Patrol.

That's the gist of it, yes.
