What are the rules and regulations that the CHP has for firearms? What can you cary with you on the job, and what can't you? I'm looking to buy a gun, and I want to know what the exact rules and regulations are so I can cary it on the job.

No need to buy one. We can only carry what the department issues us.

You could still get one for your personal backup.

If you haven't graduated from our Academy I think buying a firearm and worrying about regulations is VERY premature. And a waste of money.

Thanks guys. I think I found the gun that the department issues to all the officers.

It's a Smith & Wesson 4006TSW.

Correct me if I'm wrong. I looked a lot of places for the info on if CHP officers were issued their sidearm or not, and I couldn't find any relevant information. From what I'm told, many branches of law enforcement have their officers buy their own weapons. That's why I was wondering what the rules were. Thanks guys.

i am not an officer, but

you are issued your gun at the academy, it is the one you qualify on, and eventually it will be the gun that you carry in the field. All officers carry the S&W while working. For off duty and backup i believe you can carry what you want(i would assume their is some sort of restriction). you are not going to get much info. about backup's though because it deals a little with officer safety. like i said i am not an officer and all of the information that i just gave is available on the net.
