This is a great event that will happen throughout the country next saturday. This is my depts bulletin on event I will post more when I get it
Gentlemen,
I'd like to ask for a few minutes of you time once again this year.
The "Wreaths Across America" ceremony is to be held at the San Francisco National Cemetery - Presidio, on Saturday 12-13-08. This is to honor the members of our Armed Forces who won't be home for the holidays this year, and corresponds with the event at Arlington National Cemetery. Please plan on attending if at all possible and show your support. This is simply a national moment of silence, a wreath laying ceremony, a short speech by the organizer, and a short speech by a returning veteran.
We will meet just inside the cemetery (see attached map) at 0830 hours to get lined up. Service starts at 0845 and will be done by 1000 hrs.
The SF Fire Department is sending out at least one rig, our Mounted Unit will be there with the US Park Police regular and Mounted Unit, along with Presidio Fire department. Members of every branch of the Armed Forces with their families will be in attendance for this short -politician free event- with Ofc Larry Chan on bagpipes and SPEC Mark Lundin on bugle. The only "speakers" will be returning vets and the USV organizer.
All you need to do is show up and stand at attention. Show the vets and their families that we remember and appreciate them. Last year the parents of a fallen soldier were in attendance and stated that their son's body had been escorted home from SFO by the SFPD. They expressed to me how much it meant to them to see all the police officers again at the short ceremony, that we had not forgotten that he wouldn't be home for Christmas.
A bunch of us came out last year and I'd really appreciate if you can do the same again this year.
Check out the ATTACHED FLYER (hopefully is on your Station reading clip by now - please print and hang if it is not, thanks!). PLEASE forward this to everyone you can think of, PD, military, civilian.
The Chief has approved wearing class A uniforms and attending on duty as staffing allows, with OIC approval. Call me with any questions, and thanks in advance.
