Hey guys,

I have a question regarding left turns over solid double yellow lines. I know we can make a left turn into a drive way or public street or a legal U-turn. Can you clarify what it means by turning to the left at any intersection? As for exiting a driveway such as a gas station, is it ok to make a left turn over the solid double yellow lines in order to get to the light? (I drew a child like illustration  )http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x286/eazyle/car.jpg

21460. (a) When double parallel solid lines are in place, no person driving a vehicle shall drive to the left thereof, except as permitted in this section.

(b) When the double parallel lines, one of which is broken, are in place, no person driving a vehicle shall drive to the left thereof, except as follows:

(1) That the driver on that side of the roadway in which the broken line is in place may cross over the double line or drive to the left thereof when overtaking or passing other vehicles.

(2) As provided in Section 21460.5.

(c) Either of the markings as specified in subdivision (a) or (b) does not prohibit a driver from crossing the marking when (1) turning to the left at any intersection or into or out of a driveway or private road, or (2) making a U-turn under the rules governing that turn, and either of the markings shall be disregarded when authorized signs have been erected designating offcenter traffic lanes as permitted under Section 21657.

Thank you!

You may turn left over a double yellow line.

Two solid yellow linesmean no passing. Never drive to the left of these lines unless you are:

* Turning left at an intersection.
* Turning into or out of a private road or driveway.
* In a carpool lane that has a designated entrance on the left.
* Instructed to drive on the other side of the road because your side is closed or blocked.

Examples of lane markings

You may not, however, turn left over a double-double yellow line that is separated by at least 24" - that constitutes a center median.

Two sets of solid double yellow lines spaced two or more feet part are considered a barrier. Do not drive on or over this barrier or make a left turn or a U-turn across it except at designated openings. (See "B" below)

Now, if the inside line of a Double-double is broken, you may turn across it.

A center left turn lane is in the middle of a two-way street and is marked on both sides by two painted lines. The inner line is broken and the outer line is solid.

If a street has a center left turn lane, you must use it when you turn left (VC §21460.5[c]) or start a permitted U-turn. You may only drive for 200 feet in the center left turn lane. This lane is not a regular traffic lane or a passing lane. To turn left from this lane, signal and drive completely inside the center left turn lane. Do not stop with the back of your vehicle blocking traffic. Make sure the lane is clear in both directions and then turn only when it is safe. Look for vehicles coming toward you in the same lane to start their left turn.

When turning left from a side street or driveway, signal and wait until it is safe. Then you may drive into the center left turn lane. Enter traffic only when it is safe.

You may drive across a center left turn lane.

The way I used to teach it, FOR SINGLE DOUBLE YELLOW LINES, the lines cannot be to the right of your driver's door. So, turning left across them is ok, as is most (not all) U-Turns (as the line stays on your left), but it is illegal to pull out to pass, pull out to check if traffic is coming, or move across them so they are to the driver's door's right side. (I used to say driver's left hand, but some smart aleck came up with "What about the left tires and door....)
