The California Highway Patrol is warning St. Patrick's Day revelers to have a designated driver while asking the public asking the to report drunken drivers.
The latest CHP traffic data shows that 1,462 people were killed on state highways in alcohol-related crashes in 2004. The state's Traffic Action Response, or STAR, team will be in "high gear" this weekend to address the problem of drinking and driving, a CHP news release said.
The project involves members of the CHP, the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control, the Office of Traffic Safety, DMV and Caltrans.
CHP officers will be talking to business owners before Friday's festivities to inform them how they can help prevent alcohol-related crimes and drunken driving.
A news conference kicking off the weekend enforcement will be held today at 11 a.m. at the ABC headquarters in Sacramento, the release said.
