How bad does a bankruptcy look on your BI? I recently went bottoms up in Oct. 2005, since then I have really been trying to figure things out and get my finances and life going in the right direction. The life of a California Highway Patrol officer has really started grabbing my interest in the recent months. In order to have a chance at the CHP I would have to go back to school for a few semesters and get in shape. About 4 years ago I started the testing process but gave up after 2 Q.A.P.'s with a high score of 85. With that being said I'm pretty sure with more schooling and a few more years of life and maturity under my belt, I might have a chance with the CHP.

Not answering for the CHP....being Im not one, but you'd have a hard time getting hired by anyone with a Bankruptcy only 5 months ago.

Thanks for the reply. What I am figuring is that by the time I go to school for a couple of semesters and make it through the testing process it will have been 24-30 months. What kind of chances do you see then?

From another thread:
Specific dates and/or guidelines will not be discussed here. Just be honest and let us make the decision.

If you have any concerns regarding whether you may have an issue in your background which may lead to disqualification, it is highly recommended that you contact the CHP Applicant Investigation Unit for assistance PRIOR TO beginning the selection process. While our investigators cannot divulge the CHP's specific disqualification criteria, through a candid dialogue with you they can provide guidance and assistance in helping you evaluate your personal characteristics as they relate to the CHP's automatic disqualification criteria. The Cadet Hiring Unit can be reached Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. through 5:00 p.m. (Pacific Standard Time) at (916) 375-2180.

From first hand experince, they can be very helpful. Check it out. Hope this helps

My question would be, why, if you decided a few years ago that you wanted to go into law enforcement, were you so financially irresponsible to end up in bankruptcy? That said, it's a loaded question. There are causes of bankruptcy, other than financial irresponsibility, but they are slim.

Answer: When I started the testing process it was in 2001. I still lived with my parents at the time and after not being able to get any higher then 85 on my QAP I gave up on the CHP because work was going well and I was moving up in the ranks. I then decided I was ready to move out on my own. After that I made the big mistake of letting the credit card devils get a hold of me. I just kept spending and before you knew it, I had gotten my G/f pregnant and just couldn't afford all of our bills on my own. This led me to bankruptcy. Now that I have a family to think about and my company has capped our wages and told us it would be a long long time before we would be able to advance, I have decided to start job hunting. The CHP has been something that has always interested me, I just thought I'd be better off at my current job. Boy, was I wrong!!

FILDO.....

By no means are your hopes of a career in LE over. Still apply. If not to the CHP, maybe somewhere else. At least you will know where you stand. Dont spend 2 years thinking your not qualified when you may be. Life happens...even to cops, and it will as long as we keep hiring from the human race. I know many cops who have filed bankruptcy. All you can do is explain yourself.
