Okay....I just doled out several infractions and deleted seven posts that had nothing to do with those WHO HAVE RECEIVED their letter into this class, and were DISCUSSIONS ABOUT HIRING OR HOPEFUL. Two of them were applicants providing advice and/or rumors, which is a large part of why the hiring forum was shut down in the first place.

CHPWife started this thread FOR THOSE WHO HAVE RECEIVED THEIR INVITATION to this class. That does not open the "back door" for hiring discussions.

Welcome IV-08. I can't believe that there is another class coming in already. It seems like just yesterday we were there at Orientation and now my baby was there for you guys. It's so awesome. Just stick it out, its worth it. It's hard but my fiance tells me it's all been worth it. Good luck Juniors!

Congrats to CTC IV-08!!! My fiance is starting his official day as a cadet today!!! I'm so proud of him and to all those who made it. I've heard the first month can be extremely tough. I was wondering if anyone knows if there's anything I can do to help minimize his stress and workload? Like anything I can do to help him study to pass those LD exams?

Congratulations to you and your fiance. My husband is a senior cadet...I can't believe CTC IV started today. Time flies by. For me, the first day was the hardest. I worried and wondered what was going on...it's hard to not be able to text or call. But it gets easier, I promise. The best thing you can do for your cadet is keep life at home as drama free as possible. Your cadet will go through the MOST STRESSFUL time in his life- he'll need a sense of normalcy when he goes home. Actually, I try to make it better than normal- I make his favorite foods and all that catering bit that he didn't really get much of before the academy. My cadet has told me that receiving encouraging letters really helps. Another thing I've learned is to not take his grumpiness personally. Before the academy, he was very mellow....but now he is often stressed. Just be there as his encourager. I'll be honest, it isn't easy (I can't wait for him to graduate), but I do know that these 27 weeks of sacrifice are nothing compared to the benefits of being a part of the California Highway Patrol family. Good luck to you and your cadet.

My cadet is also a senior this week as well. (However, I was told by my cadet that they are not officially seniors until they earn it.) I would agree with trying to make his life as drama free as possible when he comes home or even when he calls. I have learned that at the end of the day, my cadet needs to vent BIG time. Let them do this. You may feel a little left out because you aren't there to completely understand but you are their connection to the outside world. Just a heads up, The first week will be filled with paperwork, stress, getting yelled at, and somewhere in there they will sleep. Just remember you are not alone, and neither are they. This will be a great test for them as well as you. And remember, as hard as it might seem for you, its twice as hard for them. If you have any questions, please feel free to pm me. I'm happy to help. And know just what your going through. Good luck to the new class!!

Today was also my hubby's first day at the academy. We've been waiting for this day for so long. It's so exciting that I don't think the "missing him" part has quite set in yet. We have a son who will be 4 years old in January and I'm currently expecting our 2nd child (due a few weeks after graduation).

I know that this experience will be challenging but it is SO worth it! I know that my hubby is just keeping his eye on the prize and not worrying about the small stuff. I hope these 27 weeks go by quickly!

Any other Cadet wives in the Fresno area? It would be great to meet some other wives (especially with kids) to connect with.

Today was my husbands first day as well. :biggrin:We have waited so long to start that even though it will be very hard for both of us, we are very excited and willing to do all thats necessary for him and us to succeed.

This morning after dropping him off was really hard, but now that the "cry fest" (as I call it) has passed I'll be able to move on and be the support system he needs.

This is the first time since we've been married (almost 3 yrs) that we've been seperated for even a day, let alone at night. It'll be an adjustment.

I have two daughters both under 2 and I live in the Elk Grove area.

Thanks for all the advice to the wives and significant others who have already had experiance being the one at home.

This will be a trial, but it will be so worth it. Sort term sacrifice = long term blessings for my family.

My cadet son also began his first day today.... We could not be more proud of him  It was hard to say goodbye to him yesterday as he left for Sac, but I know the journey he is on is the most awesome experience only the select few will ever truly know. To realize how many people began the process and that OUR 241 are now blessed with this opportunity is really quite amazing!!!!

We live in Bakersfield and would love to hear from those near us...

Be strong CTC IV 08...we know you can do it!

I have a cadet in the senior class and those 27 weeks go by so fast. Don't worry about when they don't call they are working hard to make a better life for their families. Also my Cadet really likes to get letter, he says it help him through the long days and night without me.

Congrats to those cadets who started today!!! My cadet is in the senior class, and it has been a stretching time for both him and I. Although as i look back, it truly is amazing just how fast the time flies!! I think the hardest time is during the first week and just the "unknown" of the whole thing!! So hang in there!!!

My husband also started the academy this morning as well. I am so excited for him, this is something he has always wanted to do. I miss him already! I can't wait to get his first call! We have two young children, so I am not letting them see that I'm upset. I know it will get easier, but today was a hard day. Are there any other local families on here from Stanislaus County area?

And yes, while today seems long, the 27 weeks will go quickly, and next thing you know, you will be facing break in, and then before you know it, you are off probation!! But the first few weeks seem like they never end. Keep up the positive attitude, and it will go by.

My husband started the academy today. I can't believe that is already here. He has been in the process since this March.

Last night, my son, my in-laws and me, of course left my husband at his hotel and had to head home to start the work week. That was the hardest thing I have ever had to do. Knowing that this would be the hardest thing he ever deals with and he has to do it alone and I can't be there with him. Last night was very hard. My son missed his daddy and I couldn't stop crying long enough to put him to bed.

Tonight he was able to make a short phone call and he sounded like he was having a decent time and wasn't miserable.

If anybody is in the Turlock, Livingston, Atwater area I would like to get together to help support eachother.

I miss my husband very much and I am proud of all the cadets that made it this far.

My hubby started the Academy today also. He was originally in CTC II-08, but got injured. Getting him to leave the house this morning was rough, but I talked to him tonight and he seemed good. I think that once he got there and back into the swing of things, if was like he never left.

My hubby and I have four kids ages 8, 4, 21 months, and 7 months. We live in the Sac area. Ladies...let me know if you need anything, this is our second time through so it is a little (and let me emphasize little) but easier for me.

How awesome that some of you were actually able to speak with your cadet on the first day! I can't wait to hear from mine...I hope once I hear from him my nervousness will ease (and maybe I will get some sleep!). Am I the only Mom of IV-08 that is posting so far?

I wish I could have heard from mine as well. Just to hear how it all has been going, and to easy my nerviousness and heart ache.

I find myself looking at the clock throughout the day and wondering what exactly he's doing at time. Once this first week is over and we can talk for a while in the evenings maybe he'll tell me a little of whats going on.

Then again, who, really, likes to talk about work when the day is done!

For me the second day apart from my husband is always the worst. Day one is just like he went to work and had to work late, and for some reason I always sleep good taking up the whole bed the first night. But day two is always a little too quiet and I always have to muster up all of my energy just to get anything accomplished. Thankfully, by day three you usually have your daily routine going pretty smoothly and I find myself using my free time to finish all those "some day I'll get that done" things.

Just a little background... My husband also just started the academy on Monday. But we are definitely no strangers to this separation thing. He just got done with 7 years in the military. I hope you all are hanging in there and looking forward to this weekend.

I agree about the second day being worse. The first day I was able to distract myself enough with various tv shows and errands that needed to get done. But now...I have nothing to keep myself busy with. It's not too bad during the day but around 6 it seems to really hit me that he isn't coming home tonight. I did get to talk to my boyfriend last night which was really nice. I'm looking forward to his call tonight! I think the days will start going by faster though as I get into the swing of things!!!

Just a suggestion...What ever you do, do NOT harp on "I miss you" etc. Your significant other is going to be working his/her a** off and will be stressed out like he/she probably never has been before. The last thing he/she needs is the reminder of how much you "Miss him/her" and/or "how lonely" you are.

Lots of support, encouragement, positive vibes will help him/her make to graduation.

Good luck to all of you!!!

I promise! I've spent a lot of time away from my hubby, with and without any contact and it gets easier. You just have to remember if you don't get a phone call one night or if you do and it's really short, that they are so tired and mental exhausted. So just tell them you love them, that everything is going great at home, and that you'll see them soon. You get a routine down and you have to surround yourself with positive people. After a week or so the whole family will be in such a good routine that'll it'll feel like no big deal. Just remember when you talk to them or when they come home, keep it happy and drama free.

Today was a better day. I was able to function at work and then follow through at home with my son without breaking down. I only cried last night when I went to bed by myself. Today was easier for me too. I got a brief phone call from my husband last night; all he really said was that he was exhausted, and good night.

Yesterday I cried a lot, my sister came over to help me not be so upset in front of my kids. Today I was fine until about the time he usually comes home from work, that was hard, I shook it off and kept going though. We have three kids at home, they don't need me to be all upset. He's never been in the military or anything so I've never been away from him for very long. We'll get through it though! By graduation day, it won't seem like any time at all.

Day 1 was the hardest for me. Day 2 was easier, and today Day 3 is easier than Day 2. My girls keep me pretty busy and I'm working on Christmas presants for the whole family. I also scrapbook.

Last night I got a call from the hubby. He says he's doing great, and that it's a lot of work and that he was tired so he wont talk long, but wanted to remind me that he loved me. So sweet huh? He also said they get this wednesday liberty. I thought they usually don't get first wednesday liberty. However, I'm very very excited to go and see him for a few hours tonight. I'm not complaining about the change.

I'm so proud of him and all our cadets. They're working so hard for us. Lets cheer them on. One week is almost over and about 26 left to go! I'm sure with our support and help and their dedication we can make it to graduation!

In the Sac. and there abouts area is there a "play" group, or Mommys group or something like that?

I sooo understand how you feel. My husband is in CTC III, and when he first left I experienced all those feelings too. Family and friends definitely helped me. He was never in the military so we were NEVER apart more than a day....maybe two. Let me encourage you by saying, it does get easier. Will it ever be easy? It hasn't for me, but everyone is different. BUT, it is so much easier than before. At this point I'm kind of missing him more again, because the end is in the horizon for me. I look at my calendar and know that pretty soon he'll be back home. I know that in the end, there will be NO regrets. CHP is the best and I'm glad he has been given the opportunity to be a part of it. Hang in there. The weekend is almost here!

It usually takes a couple of weeks. The staff office will pick a couple people to be "Bloggers" and photographers for the class, and things will be updated weekly (unless they are super-busy, then whenever they can!).

You didn't miss anything... I was being optimistic and hoping for the cadets to get liberty tonite, and I'm so grateful to God that it came true!!! I didn't know the cadets got liberty till my hubby called. Similar to you, I too could not go and see him. However being able to talk to him for a brief moment was a blessing in itself. My husband called me Tuesday night and told me they where having liberty tonight. It was a blessing to see him. It has given himself and me a much needed boost to make it through the remainder of the week.

He said that academy is pretty much what he expected and that it isn't as hard as he thought it would be, but it is still very challenging. He said, but tomorrow we start PT.

I think he'll be singing a different tune after tomorrow. But it's great to know he has such a positive attitude about academy, and that he (despite all the work) is rather enjoying the experiance. He is looking forward to PT, and says he is enjoying himself and many of the other cadets are feeling pretty much the same way!

I'm so proud of our cadets! They're doing so well, and they where looking good tonight as I saw them leave for liberty.

Gosh, the weekend pass by so fast and he's gone.... With all the studying and errands to run, I wonder when can we spend quality time together? Well, four more days to go and hopefully the cadets will get some break from all these tests and reports.

I was wondering if anyone knows the fastest way from the academy to the sac airport? My cadet told me it took about 1.5 hours from checking out of the academy to checking in at the airport. Thus, he doesn't get to the airport till 6:30. For Christmas, there is only 1 flight after 6 and it's pretty close to that time. I'm worried my husband won't make it in time before departure. Any good advice??? I would be terrified if he missed Christmas...

Thanks in advance for any inputs!

The academy is pretty close to the airport. There are two ways to get there and I'm not sure which is fastest.
One is to get on I-80 to Reno-then I-5 North and in about seven miles is the airport.
The othe way is Take Reed ave east-Left on Harbor Blvd-Left on the Old River Rd-Left on County Rd 118-Take I-5 South-Exit Airport Blvd
Like I said I'm not sure which one is fastest but I think it takes a while for the cadets to check out at the academy. I live about two miles away from the academy and the earliest my cadet has been home so far is about 5:35. Hopefully the flights work out for your cadet!!

I don't know which is fastest either. Those where the two I would mention. I would think it would be better to stay off the freeways because 5 - about 6:30ish has seemed to be rush hour traffic. I've been stuck coming home in it during that time when bringing my cadet home. A trip that usually takes 20 min took an hour. On one of his liberties you could have him "test drive" it to see which takes longer.

I don't know where you live, but I know that the academy is only about 6 miles from the Amtrak station. So, if that's a possibility, he can always take the train. We're in Fresno and they recently lowered the rates on Amtrak so it's only $25 one way for him to come home. My cadet drives a gas-guzzling SUV, so that $25 on Amtrak is actually about $12 cheaper than the gas would cost him. Plus, he can study or whatever he needs to do on the train.

mjpinkie
11-17-2008, 06:09 PM
The train is such a great idea! Also, if a train doesn't work there is a bus (Greyhound I think) station just a few miles away also. Maybe he could carpool with some other cadets if the train/bus/airplain doesn't work out!

Thank you everyone for all your great advices!!! We live in the San Bernardino area, so my husband definitely has to fly back home. I checked the flights for LAX and the last one is at 7 pm. I told my husband to do a dry run on Friday to see if he can make it to the aiport by 6:30. Like what most of you said, the thing that consumes the majority of the time is the checking out. I'm going to assume on Christmas eve, it'll be worse because everyone wants to leave on time.

My next option would be to change his flight to John Wayne airport, which the last flight is at 7:35 pm. With that, I"m hoping he'll be able to make it. However I never been to that airport, so I have no idea as to the security level and etc. I surely hope everything will work out.

But thanks again everyone for your help! I appreciate it.

JetBlue flies into Long Beach leaving Sacto at 730p, so you have many options.

Don't book one too tight, better to have to drive a little further to get a time he will make.

If you are in San Bernardino why not go to Ontario? There are 3 flights after 6:20 direct Sacto to Ontario on Southwest. I would defiantly do Orange County or Burbank before LAX.

If you are talking just about Christmas Eve I would reccomend Southwest to Burbank because there are 7:30 and 8:25 flights.

The staff, for the most part, will be there until their shift is complete...and I can guarantee the Officers in the Staff Office will be there as they are 24/7. To add a little to what Mom has said, DO NOT ASSUME ANYTHING...the Cadets are being paid until 5:00, I would bet they will be at the Academy until 5:00. Having said this, if they are lucky enough to get out early...great; but again, don't bet on it!

It is a little shocking when they start losing all that weight. My husband looked totally different in just a couple weeks. Just remember that they do get square meals, even if they aren't most appetizing. And the decreased body fat is a good thing! Soon enough he will have more muscle and you'll be drooling over him (even more than you normally do)! But everything there is structured to make sure they maximize their training and prepare them for life in the field. It all works just how it is supposed to! Just hang in there!

My hubby was a 'healthy' 190 (6'3'') when he went in, and after a few weeks on the 'training' table, he was down to 180 of solid, lean muscle. It is quite disconcerting to see your significant other looking, well, malnourished, but I can promise you that their diet there is monitored by a nutritionist. They are getting exactly the right balance of lean proteins, carbohydrates, and starches. Like Jrsfan stated, in no time, you will come to REALLY appreciate his new "lean and mean" look. Enjoy it while you can... it doesn't last long once his "personal trainers" and "personal chefs" are no longer in the picture. Keep your chin up - It's not as bad as it seems.

Hey! As I'm sure you know, the cadets participated in a bone marrow drive today at the academy. News reporters were there and I'm pretty sure Company B was the company filmed. They were on the news at 6 and might be on again at 10 or 11...I'm not sure. Anyways, KCRA (Channel 3 in Sacramento) was the news station that the cadets were featured on. My cadet is in Company A and I'm pretty sure he said that Company B was the company being filmed. Just thought I'd let everyone know what station the news broadcast was on. It's fun to see them giving back to the community already!!

I have it on good authority that the book is in fact a song book.

Due to popular demand, a new segment of the graduation ceremony will feature a 37 piece kazoo ensemble. Their last action as cadets (at least for the 37 lucky future officers chosen for the coveted spots) will be to perform the CHiPs Theme for the assembled crowd.

Highly placed sources within the department have fueled rampant speculation throughout Headquarts that Commissioner Farrow himself will provide the signature bass drum beat that starts the song, though the Commissioner's office has so far refused to acknowledge the rumor.
