Yesterday my best friend and I drove up to Sacramento for a day to visit his dad who is in the CHP. When he heard I was interested he invited me up to discuss the details about it and let me ask any questions I had. It was really beneficial to see and hear things straight from someone who is in the CHP. Most of all, I learned a ton of stuff and got to see things first hand.
The highlight of the day however was the tour of the academy. First we drove through and got an idea of what all the buildings actually were. Then I got to go in and see a couple of the classrooms, pool, gym and of course the rec room complete with pool tables, a piano and of course a big-screen. We also got to watch a few of the patrol cars on the high-speed track spinning out and doing other things.
Even if I wasn't interested in the CHP I would have enjoyed this but seeing it all in person makes me want it even more.
Junebug, that is cool. It seems like I read somewhere in the applicant study guide that one way to prepare for the QAP (ie: showing what you have done to prepare) is to visit the Academy. You had the in with your friend so that was cool.
I have already had my QAP but do you know if applicants can still make a visit to the Academy for a tour? And who would that get setup through? Recruitment perhaps?

Good question....another inquiring mind would like to know.

That brings back memories. I always enjoyed gathering around the piano in the rec hall and singing along with the other cadets after a day of training. And of course there was nothing like watching the NBA package on that big screen. I'm really glad they decided to get that since I don't have a big screen TV at home.

i was planning on going to the Academy and checking it out...
but, i was talking to the Cpt. that i know and he told me not to. He said that while it would be a great experience that you really don't learn anything that will help you out before you get there. Worst though he said that you don't want the instructors remembering your face when you get to the academy, it just draws unneeded attention

Not going to happen.

Retchp,
You know the big screen barely works anymore. When I went through we were allowed to hang out in the pit on the weekends (there were no cell phones and my wife was out of state). The big screen, VHS, and dish weren't working when I left in 04'. Who knows what the situation is now.
But I hear they have a cadet masseuse, an espresso cart with a coed attendant, WIFI internet access, Dishnetwork in every dorm room, and you get Monday, Wednesday, and Friday off no matter what infractions you commit.

Ah, I alays looked forward to the mint on the pillow each night. My butler was so nice that he would sometimes leave me two.
