I wasnt working my regular command this morning, instead I was assigned to a specialized detail. While there I happened to switch to my commands frequency. I listened to a few jobs and then it happened. I heard a panicked voice call over the radio for a ambulance. Thoughts were rushing my head, the job before was a dispute with a knife. The next thing I know, I am hearing that two officers were shot. My direct brethren. I call to the detail Sgt and tell him the situation and he tells me he would have someone relieve me. I sat in the darkness of the night, listening to the crackle of the radio. "Bobby, take care of my kids" screamed my mentor. His words crying out fear and desperation. My heart sunk, cause not only was my good friend facing the worst fears we all have, but I couldnt be of any help.

Luckily, the two cops shot, both excellent officers, both of whom I look up to in the greatest of admiration, are ok. Saved by there bullet proof vests and general heroics. They didnt have room to draw on the guy so they fought him for the gun. Thank God.

Tonight, I was reminded yet again of the terror of this job. I've seen it before, experienced it before, but this time it hit home a little more. Please all be safe, wear your vests and keep sharp.

Nothing worse than feeling helpless when your brother is hurt. Like someone else said, your report was clearly understood by those of us who have served.
I remember the last radio broadcast from CHP Officer Alfred Turner back in 1975. He had been shot with a .357 on I 5 near Los Banos and his courageous and heartbreaking transmission was later played for training purposes at briefings. I am sure we used it in our academy also.http://www.odmp.org/officer.php?oid=13503

I am grateful that this incident ended with the officers surviving
