View Full Version : Speeding Ticket cont.
I recieved the the fine the other day in the mail for my speeding ticket and it will be costing me $330.00. I can deal with that, and I can go to traffic school to get this dismissed. In order to do that I willneed to pay a non-refundable administrative fee of $214.00. So now I am thinking about just paying the fine and taking the conviction. What do you all think about this?

Something is wrong there with the admin fee. Mine was 25 bucks (the fee) about 3 years ago when I got a ticket and did traffic school. I would call the court and talk to someone.

when i got my ticket last year i paid the fine and went to traffic school. you could fight it if you want, but that is your choice. if you do fight it i suggest start with the trial by written declaration and go from there.

Hey Rich,
That admin fee DOES sound pretty awful. The admin fee for my last ticket (in winter 05) was somewhere around $30....

As you can see above, it could be a little confusing. My ticket was $281- and the fee was $13-. All I was told to pay was the $294, but since I did not due that before the day it was due, I had to pay by credit card and got charged a fee of $12.95. Hence, the $306.95!
Written for 85 in a 25. Got changed to a 35 (actual posted speed). I have slowed down, since this was my last ticket.(this is from 2001 btw)

Okay, no one really tried to answer Rich's question in this thread: should he pay the fine and take the conviction or pay the fee, go to traffic school, and have the fine dismissed.
Rich, I'd pay the fee, do traffic school, and keep the conviction OFF your record. First of all, it's a point that will stay there for seven years. Also, your insurance company can count it against you to calculate your premiums. The fees have gone up in some jurisdictions and some courts assess the fine but still offer the option to go to traffic school just so you can keep it off your record. Of course if you have a class A license now traffic school is no longer an option provided by law.
Taking the traffic school option may seem expensive (admin fee equivelant to the fine + traffic school fee) but it will keep your record clean. This WILL save you way more money on insurance. In the long run it's the best option. Take it from a guy who had to do traffic school on two successive weekends from two citations back in 1977. That was before traffic courts had computer systems. My mom took me to both traffic courts on the same day just so I could ask for traffic school and get the tickets dismissed before the two courts discovered each other's citations. My mom was a legal secretary back then and one of her best friends was a judge. He suggested she take decisive action because she was paying to insure me to drive the family car. It blew two weekends and I had to watch Red Asphalt twice instead of hanging out at the beach and surfing with friends. Still, I disclosed both cites (one from Anaheim PD and another from the CHP) during my background investigation eleven years later.

TAKE THE TRAFFIC SCHOOL!!! As has already been mentioned, it stay on your driving record and WILL affect your insurance. The fee does not seem out of line...My son got cited in January for 75 in a 65 and the fine was $134.00 or $158 and Traffic School. He chose traffic school (since I'm paying the insurance)

There are courts that will not offer traffic school because of the severity of this citation. If they offer it, take it in a heartbeat. I would not want to be anywhere near a courtroom with a 50 over the posted speeding ticket. I've seen judges suspend licenses for less than that. If you go to court, you'd be in serious jeopardy of losing your license.

They're talking about two different cites...

Red: 85 in a 35???? WOW!!! Long story. I admited to doing 55. I was speeding. I accept fault, but I did thank the officer for thinking I could make that freeway on ramp I was approaching at that speed. This was a visual estimation only by a city PD with admitted not visual estimation experince. No radar, no pacing. Oh well. I was guilty, and paid my dues.
I have decided to suck it up and pay the admin fee. Thanks for your responses.
