PETALUMA -- A California Highway Patrol vehicle and a Snapple truck crashed Tuesday afternoon on southbound U.S. Highway 101 just north of San Antonio Road, backing up traffic for miles and sending the officer to the hospital with serious injuries.

The CHP officer was taken to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital and the driver of the Snapple truck was taken to Novato General Hospital, CHP Officer Brian Land said.

The accident was reported at 2:10 p.m. A Sig-alert was issued at 2:25 p.m. and one lane of the highway was opened in both directions at 2:47 p.m.

The CHP said a helicopter was initially summoned by the Sonoma County Fire Department but was canceled. A big-rig tow was summoned for the Snapple truck and a flatbed truck was called for the CHP car.

<< ABC7 has learned from an eyewitness that the CHP cruiser was parked on the southbound lanes, with the officer inside the car, when it was struck by a Snapple delivery truck. >>

This irritates me so much. I just don't understand how the heck you aim for a parked car on a freeway without realizing it...makes no sense to me.

From the amount of damage to the CHP car would I be far off by guessing the car was stopped at the point of impact?

Another accident last night in my area.

Two California Highway Patrol officers are suffering from only minor injuries after a spectacular crash on a West Los Angeles freeway.

Authorities say the officers were driving south on I-405 at around a 12:45 a.m. when their car blew a tire, launched over a guardrail, and rolled several times.

The two were briefly trapped in the overturned vehicle until fire crews arrived to rescue them. Three southbound lanes on the 405 were blocked during the rescue operation.

Online CHP records indicate the officers may have been chasing two vehicles that were speeding at 90 miles per hour when their car spun out of control after blowing a tire.

But a CHP spokesman says the officers were not involved in a pursuit, and that the cause of the crash is under investigation.
