I have had a chance to play with the ASP handcuffs and was wondering what the official policy was on officers carrying their own brand/style of handcuffs, or are they only able to use what is issued. I really like the feel of the ASP cuffs and would like to be able to use them on the job when I get out on the road. If any of you have had experience with them, what is you opinion of them?

Hmmm... Haven't seen the ASP cuffs. As for specific policies, they will not be discussed here as they may relate to officer safety (and sometimes confidential materials).

Thanks dw, I was just wondering how some peolple felt about them. If it is a safety issue, that fine by me.

What do you like about them?

I just went and looked at the ASP web page, and don't see anything earth-shaking about them....no huge improvements over what's already on the market. Is there something in particular that you really liked about them?

On a different note, I don't like the S&W cuffs at all....much prefer the Peerless.

Soooo, is the type of cuffs used by the CHP top secret?

DW didn't say that the type of cuffs was "top secret" - he simply said that there wouldn't be any discussions of specific policy.

I've been using them for just over a year now and love them. In fact my partner and three or four others on my shift went out and got a set after playing around with mine. They are very nice, there is a key hole on both sides so when you?re in a hurry you can just slap them on your subject and not have to break his wrist trying to get to the key hole later. The double lock and release mechanism is easy and works very well. The hinge point has a ball bearing in it so the cuff swings through nice and smooth with little effort. The cuffs them self are a little bigger so they fit on the large individuals that you come into contact with. I would recommend them to anyone.

I just liked some of the minor things about it, such as double lock indicator marker, key access on both sides, the finger indentation for closing and adjusting, and the feel of the composite housing. Nothing radical, but they do have solid, comfortable feel to them. The only "disadvantage" is they they require either their own special cuff case or they will fit in a double case because of the housings larger size.

Thanks RC, that is what I was looking for.

I put mine in my issued case, I just left them in there for a couple of days, and let them stretch the leather out a little.
