I was just wonderng why don't we ever see the California Highway Patrol on the T.V show COPS? And on the T.V show "World's Wildest Police Videos", why don't we ever see in-dash cameras by the CHP? I am dieing to watching you Chippes!

Thanks.

For starters, we don't have video cameras in our patrol vehicles state-wide. They are being tested in certain areas from what I have heard. I have seen CHP on COPS before, but only in a support position to the PDs or SOs. If you want some CHP stories, we are featured from time to time on "Real Stories of the Highway Patrol". Do a search for the program with your TIVO and you may be able to record and watch those programs. I believe new ones are not being made anymore, but the re-runs are still on. I have also seen pursuits televised from time to time on those REAL TV and similiar shows. They are out there, just got to look for them.

we are featured from time to time on "Real Stories of the Highway Patrol". If you have direct TV, it is on Fox Reality Channel. I think at mid-night. Search for "Real Stories of the Highway Patrol", we have covered it before.

Real Stories of the Highway Patrol sometimes has the CHP on it, but they are almost always reenactments, which I might add from personal experience are SUPER CHEESY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The director will pose you in weird positions (hold the officer) and will deviate from what really happened.

But... I did get paid a couple hundred bucks for about six hours, plus I got lunch

Sort of like being at a scene and then reading about it in the media the next day? They usually have about 50 to 60 percent of what actually happened correctly reported.

5150, was it a catered lunch or nothing special. I love those details where they have a real cook come in. Some just throw a package of cookies at you and say, that's it. (Not that I'm a tad over my academy days weight).

"Real Stories" did do re-enactments, but they also used to come out and ride with us on graveyard shift a lot when the show was being filmed. I actually got on two of the episodes, and FINALLY talked them into sending me a t-shirt after the second episode (my partner and I got into a pursuit, then a long fight with an injured deuce who walked away from a t/c and didn't want to be taken into custody - both in the same night).

I was also filmed by COPS when they were riding with the SO.....they were leaving a disturbance call at a bar, and as they were getting back into their cars they just about got creamed by a high-speed deuce who came up the street sideways. We were right in the area, chased him down and took him into custody (he basically poured out of the car in a booze-bloated puddle.) As we were getting him out and hooking him up, all the camera lights and stuff came on - they had followed us, and filmed the end of it. It never made it on TV as far as I saw, though.

Winnie - we are testing the in-car cameras in a couple of areas. As usual though, the technology we're using is 10 years behind the times. We're an analog department in a digital age. The only way the equipment could be any more archaic would be if we used Betamax tapes...or maybe stone tablets!

Nope. As Winnie said, they're being tested in a few offices now.

Oh Fox Reality.....Real Stories comes on right when I get home from work in the morning (0800 or 0830)...haha! As Mac stated, they do end up with a lot of graveyard footage....and yes the re-enactments are hillariously cheezy. I don't want to get too lame about a TV show, let alone one on Fox, but seeing real stories in the morning when I get home helps me remember that my lame job right now is temporary.....

Most officers don't want them in their patrol cars. When I worked at an Orange County CHP office we had a vote about putting them in the patrol cars, I was the only one to vote yes; every single other officer voted no.

It was a Subway sandwhich, chips and a drink

However, at that time in my life I was really grateful to have any meal paid for! Ah how times have changed.
